Review - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026)
Hey guys, Chuck here, and we're taking a look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo. This movie stars the returning cast of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key, along with newcomers Benny Safdie, Brie Larson, Donald Glover, and Glen Powell.
So, this movie sees Mario and Luigi settling in to their new roles as heroes and protectors of the Mushroom Kingdom, which includes working alongside Princess Peach to defend the kingdom and keep watch over Bowser, still shrunken after the events of the first movie. But, when Bowser Jr. abducts Princess Rosalina and attacks the Mushroom Kingdom to free his father, it's up to Mario, Peach, Toad, and Luigi, along with new allies like Yoshi and Fox McCloud, to save the entire galaxy.
Now, when it comes to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it to.be a lot of fun. But, I gotta say that I found The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to be a lot more fun by comparison. The performances from the returning cast of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser were just as terrific as they were the first time around, of not somewhat improved. As for the newcomers, I had fun with Donald Glover as Yoshi, and I really enjoyed Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. But, my favorite two additions were Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, who plays well into Fox's cockiness from the Star Fox series, and Brie Larson as Rosalina. And, we do see Rosalina as the adopted mother of the Lumas, and the scenes with her and the Lumas were thoroughly adorable. Now, there is a bit of a change when it comes to the connection between Rosalina and Peach that is exclusive to this movie, but I thought it was fine and worked for the story the movie was telling.
The animation, especially with the many environments showcased throughout the movie, is definitely improved from the first movie. But, then again, Illumination is no slouch when it comes to delivering on animation. And, everything feels like it comes from the world of Nintendo's Mario franchise. But, there's a lot of Nintendo references outside of Mario and Star Fox in this movie, with one notable example being R.O.B. the Robot. And, I laughed when they mocked how sluggish R.O.B. was, which was a common complaint many Nintendo fans had towards the R.O.B. accessory in real life.
Overall, do I recommend seeing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Yes, absolutely. This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year so far. And, definitely stick around for some fun after-credits scenes.
Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you in the next review.
