Review - Song Sung Blue (2025)
Hey guys, Chuck here. Song Sung Blue,.which is based on a true story, is a new musical film released by Focus Features. Written and directed by Craig Brewer, this movie stars Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson, Ella Anderson, King Princess, Michael Imperioli, Mustafa Shakir, and Jim Belushi.
The movie tells the story of Wisconsin musician Mike Sardina, who forms a close bond with fellow musician Claire Stingl, and how the two go on to become the front duo of a Neil Diamond tribute band known as Lightning and Thunder. And, of course, the movie follows the romance, marriage, and the many trials and tribulations that Mike and Claire go through over the years.
Now, I have to admit that I wasn't sure what to expect when watching this movie, but I will admit that I had a really fun time with it. The chemistry between Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire was absolutely fantastic, and their singing was absolutely amazing. While I had a feeling that Hugh Jackman was going to sing exceptionally well, given his performances in such films as Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman, it was Kate Hudson who impressed me the most with her vocal skill.
One element that I enjoyed was the relationship that Mike and Claire had with their three children, which includes Mike's daughter from a past marriage, and Claire's son and daughter from a previous marriage. And I must say that Ella Anderson, King Princess, and Hudson Hensley as Rachel, Angela, and Dayna were all three terrific in their own right. Lastly, I definitely enjoyed the performances of such fantastic actors as Michael Imperioli, Mustafa Shakir, and Jim Belushi.
The costume and set designs were all terrific, as well as spot on for the period of time that the movie spans across. And, the music, which predominantly consists of covers of Neil Diamond songs, was also terrific. And, there were times in the movie where I found myself singing along with such songs as "Sweet Caroline," "I'm a Believer," and even the song the movie is named after: "Song Sung Blue." Heck, after I got home from seeing it, I wound up on YouTube and started listening to some Neil Diamond tracks.
So, for what ended up being a decent surprise to be sure, I thoroughly had a lot of fun with Song Sung Blue. It was a fun movie with great music, and the audience at my screening really got into it. So, if it's playing near you, definitely check it out.
Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I will see you next time for my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2025.
