My Thoughts on WWE SummerSlam (2025)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was feeling the heat over the last couple of days, as it was the setting for the biggest party of the summer: WWE SummerSlam. And, for the first time, SummerSlam was held as a two-night event, with plenty of epic matches spread across the two nights.

So, the first night of SummerSlam kicked off with Jey Uso and Roman Reigns in Tag Team action against Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker, which saw Jey and Roman take the victory. YEET! Next up was the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match, which saw Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez of the Judgement Day defend their titles against Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, with Alexa and Charlotte emerging victorious as the new WWE Women's Tag Team Champions. Next up was a one-on-one match between Karrion Kross and Sami Zayn, which saw Sami pick up the win. Nice! Anyway, next up was the WWE Women's Championship match, which saw Tiffany Stratton defend her title against Jade Cargill, with Tiffany Stratton retaining her title. Meaning that, for the time being, it's still Tiffy Time. Next up was a match that saw music star Jelly Roll team up with Randy Morton in a tag team match against Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre, in which the team of Paul and McIntyre emerged victorious. The first night of SummerSlam wrapped with its main event match, which was a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Gunther and CM Punk, in which CM Punk emerged victorious as the new World Heavyweight Champion. But, before he could relish in his victory, Seth Rollins returned and cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, and became the new World Heavyweight Champion. I will admit, I should've seen that one coming. But still, what a way to end the first day of SummerSlam

The second night of SummerSlam kicked off with a Triple-threat match for the WWE Women's World Championship, which saw Naomi defend her title against Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky, and the match ended with Naomi emerging victorious and retaining the title. Next up was the TLC (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) match for the WWE Tag Team Championship, which was held between the Wyatt Sicks (the defending champions), the Street Profits, DIY, the Motor City Machine Guns, Fraxiom, and the team of Andrade and Rey Fenix, with the Wyatt Sicks surviving the insane carnage and retaining the titles. And, when I say insane carnage, I mean this: ladders were broken, tables were broken, and chairs were smashed. The match was dope as hell. Next up was the Women's Intercontinental Championship match between Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria, which was contested with no count-outs and no disqualifications, and saw Becky, after putting up one hell of a match, overcoming the odds and emerging as the champion. And, I will say that this was one of the highlight matches, as we saw Lyra Valkyria with her hands tied together with a zip tie, and even saw Bayley show up and knock Becky around a bit. Anyway, the next match was the Steel Cage match for the United States Championship between Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa, which saw Solo Sikoa retain the title. Honestly, that one kinda sucked. Although, seeing Jacob Fatu pull a moonsault from the top of the cage was pretty awesome. Next up, we had the Intercontinental Championship match between Dominik Mysterio and AJ Styles, which saw Dominik Mysterio retain the title. Aside from AJ Styles wearing Eddie Guerrero's signature flames, I enjoyed this one. And, to end the second night, and the entirety of SummerSlam was the main event: a Street Fight for the Undisputed WWE Championship between John Cena and Cody Rhodes. And, although the real winners were the fans if you ask me, the match ended with Cody Rhodes regaining the Undisputed Championship. And, of I'm being honest, THIS is the match that Cody and Cena should have had at WrestleMania. But, in a shocker I didn't see coming, Brock Lesnar made his return to the WWE for the first time in a good while.

At this time, I would like to pay tribute, as the WWE did during the Night One broadcast for SummerSlam, to an all-time wrestling legend both in his time in WWE and his time in WCW, and that, of course is Hulk Hogan, who tragically passed away on July 24th, 2025. Hulk Hogan has a truly storied career in professional wrestling, both as a crowd favorite in WWE, and of course is remembered by '90s kids like myself for his more villainous turn during his time in WCW as a member of the NWO. Hogan, who is survived by his children Nick and Brooke, was truly an all-time great in professional wrestling, and he will be missed.

Okay, so in my opinion, the matches for the first night of SummerSlam were decent enough, but there were only one or two that really stood out, and those were the Jey Uso and Roman Reigns match against Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, as well as the Women's Tag Team Championship match that saw Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair emerging as the new champions. The second day of SummerSlam, on the other hand, had the more marquee matches, such as the TLC match for the Tag Team Championship, the Street Fight for the Undisputed WWE Championship, the Dominik Mysterio vs. AJ Styles match, and the Triple-threat Women's Championship match. So, if I had to pick which night I enjoyed more, it would be Night Two.

I also enjoyed some of the music used for SummerSlam. While the main theme, "Outside" by Cardi B (who was also the host of SummerSlam), was decent enough, it was the use of the song "Up From the Bottom" by Linkin Park used at the start of the countdown show on Night Two that caught my ears. I dunno, just hearing one of the newer Linkin Park songs for a recap of the previous night's matches was pretty awesome to me. And, of course, I gotta give props to the phenomenal job that both Michael Cole and Wade Barrett did on commentary over the weekend.

As far as the WWE premium events of 2025 so far, I gotta say that I thoroughly enjoyed a large amount of SummerSlam a bit more than a number of the other premium events this year. Definitely worth watching over both Saturday and Sunday, and I was glad to see a few championship belts exchange hands.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you in the next review. And, be sure to look out for my breakdowns of the next three WWE premium events: Clash in Paris later this month, Crown Jewel in October, and Survivor Series: WarGames in November.
