Review - Sinners (2025)
Hey guys, Chuck here. Sinners is a new horror film from director Ryan Coogler, and stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Canton, Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, and Jayme Lawson.
So, the movie is set in the year 1932 on the Mississippi Delta, and it follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who have acquired ownership of an abandoned mill, and spend the entire day assembling the people from their past to turn the place into a brand new Juke Joint. At that time, a man suddenly appears, and he begins turning the locals into vampires, and eventually is drawn to the Juke Joint by the brothers' cousin, and forcing the occupants to survive until sunrise.
This movie combined three elements exceptionally well: compelling drama, incredible Blues music, and quite possibly the best cinematic portrayal of vampires since 30 Days of Night. The way that Ryan Coogler is able to make all three work in a way that each element compliments each other showcases how far he's come since his directorial debut with Fruitvale Station.
The performances were also fantastic, with Michael B. Jordan turning in a phenomenal dual performance as Smoke and Stack. Hailee Steinfeld also delivered one of her best performances as Mary, a former love of Stack who is among the first to be turned into a vampire. Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim, Jack O'Connell as Remmick, Jayme Lawson as Pearline, and both Li Jun Li and Yao as Grace and Bo Chao were all fantastic, as well.
Honestly, Sinners is quite possibly Ryan Coogler's magnum opus. Not only one of the best movies I've, personally, seen so far in 2025, but quite possibly the best film Ryan Coogler's directed in his career. Which means I liked this movie more than EITHER of the two Black Panther movies that Coogler directed. I cannot stress this enough, but Sinners is an absolute must-see.
Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys in the next review.
