Review - A Minecraft Movie (2025)
Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I finally got around to seeing Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' A Minecraft Movie, which has been the most successful film of the year in terms of audience and the box office. The movie, based on the popular video game Minecraft by Mojang Studios, is directed by Jared Hess, and stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Danielle Brooks.
I would tell you which character the movie focuses on, but it focuses on three. On one hand, the movie focuses on Steve, played by Jack Black, who gives up a life as a doorknob salesman to become a miner, only to discover both the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal, which combined to open a door to the Overworld. The movie also focuses on '80s video game champion Garrett "the Garbage Man" Garrison, played by Jason Momoa, who winds up acquiring many of Steve's possessions, including the Orb and the Earth Crystal. Lastly, the movie focuses on a kid named Henry, played by Sebastian Hansen, and his older sister Natalie played by Emma Myers, who move to the same town Garrett lives in, and they run into Garrett, and along with him and real estate agent Dawn, played by Danielle Brooks, wind up at the mine Steve disappeared from, and end up in the Overworld themselves.
Okay, so there's a lot I have to say about this movie. For one, the performances were certainly something of a mixed bag. While Emma Myers as Natalie and Sebastian Hansen as Henry were both decent, and Danielle Brooks as Dawn was fine for what minimal screentime she got, the two biggest highlights were Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa as Garrett. Both were clearly having a blast with this movie, and were the source of some of the biggest laughs for me.
As far as the visual design of the Overworld, the Nether, and the various creatures, beings, and animals that inhabit both, it does come off as fairly game accurate, albeit with somewhat more photorealistic graphics. It kind of reminded me of the visual effects from Detective Pikachu, where all of the Pokémon resembled their animated counterparts, but with more photorealistic features. As someone less familiar with Minecraft, I can't exactly give my thoughts from the level of a fan. But, from what I've seen of the game, it's pretty damn close.
But, for me what made A Minecraft Movie so much fun to watch was just how much fun the fans of Minecraft were having. Now, I'm sure many of you have seen the viral videos of fans going insane at certain points in the movie, specifically when Jack Black said the phrase "Chicken Jockey." But, luckily, my own screening wasn't quite that insane. Still, there was an excitement from the fans for this movie. And, to me, that speaks volumes for how much of a success this movie has been. In my eyes, if the game fans are having a good time, then the filmmakers did something right.
So, if you're a fan of the game Minecraft, or simply looking for a good time at the movies, then definitely give A Minecraft Movie a shot. It's definitely worth the time to see on the big screen.
Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys in the next review.
