12 Reviews of Christmas - A Fairly Odd Christmas (2012)

Hey guys, Chuck here. After the release of A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner, Nickelodeon decided to produce a sequel to be released for the 2012 Christmas season. And, of course, director Savage Steve Holland and lead stars Drake Bell and Daniella Monet would return for A Fairly Odd Christmas, which would also Star Tony Cox, Devyn Dalton, Travis Turner, David Lewis, and Donavon Stinson.

So, it's Christmas time, and Santa Claus is getting ready for his annual deliveries on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, many of the children on Santa's nice list are having their names disappear, as they're already getting their wishes granted thanks to the wish-granting business that Timmy and Tootie have taken up since the end of the first movie. So, two of Santa's elves, Christmas Carol and Dingle Dave, escort Timmy, Tootie, Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof to the North Pole. And, it's here where Santa decides to have a talk with Timmy about needing to be more responsible and not grant as many wishes as he has been granting.

Unfortunately, Santa is warned that the gift wrapping machine is broken, Santa wishes it to be fixed, and Timmy looks to grant it. But, fairy magic doesn't work in an self-made building, and the wish turns into a blast that hurts Santa. After this debacle, Jorgen von Strangle arrives to tell Timmy that, according to the rules, a godchild of a fairy that caused harm to a Legendary figure must assume the responsibilities of said Legendary figure. In other words: since it's Timmy's fault that Santa can't do his job, Timmy must take on the responsibilities of Santa. But, this is impossible, as Timmy's wish-granting put him on the naughty list, and the only one who can fix that is Elmer the Elder Elf.

So, Timmy, Tootie, the fairies, the two elves, and Crocker (who snuck up to the North Pole to get his name removed from the naughty list) take on the perilous journey to Elmer's house. On the journey, they endure harsh blizzards, vengeful gingerbread men (one of whom had his head bitten off by a hungry Crocker), a penguin, and so much more. But, they eventually reach Elmer's house, and Elmer explains that Timmy wasn't granting wishes for others: his fairies were, and the magic has been causing more harm than good, and how with great power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, Elmer is unwilling to remove Timmy from the naughty list, but relents when he overhears Crocker's gratitude to Timmy saving him earlier. With Timmy no longer in the naughty list, the crew returns to Santa's workshop to deliver the presents. Unfortunately, the reindeer went missing (accidentally released earlier by Crocker. Whoops), so Timmy has to take the magic van to get past a gloomy cloud caused by the Winter Warlock. Luckily, the presents get delivered, Christmas is saved, Timmy and Tootie kiss under the mistletoe, and the movie ends.

Okay, so while certainly far from a great movie, A Fairly Odd Christmas is definitely a step up from its predecessor. It's great to see where Timmy has to learn about being more responsible with using fairy magic to grant wishes for others, and how his lack of responsibility almost led to disaster. A bit extreme on that last part, but whatever. The performances were pretty decent, with both Drake Bell and Daniella Monet nailing it, once again. I, personally, enjoyed Tony Cox as Elmer the Elder Elf, as well as Donavon Stinson as Santa. Some of the elements of the movie, such as the rivalry between fairies and elves, as well as how fairy magic isn't as powerful in the North Pole as it is most anywhere else was kinda neat, and just seeing the design of Santa's workshop was cool. But, I think that Nickelodeon played it a bit too safe with this one, especially with the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" message, an obvious nod to Drake Bell's voice role of Spider-Man in one of the animated Spider-Man TV shows at the time. But, I still had fun with it, and I give A Fairly Odd Christmas a rating of 4.15/5.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and 12 Reviews of Christmas will continue tomorrow with Shrek the Halls
