HallowScream - Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I recently saw the new movie Venom: The Last Dance, written and directed by Kelly Marcel, and starring Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Clark Backo, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Alanna Ubach, Peggy Lu, and Andy Serkis.
So, this movie sees Eddie Brock and the symbiote Venom both on the run after the events of Let There Be Carnage, and now having to deal with creatures known as Xenophages arriving on Earth, being sent after Venom by Knull, the creator of the symbiotes. So, it's up to Eddie, Venom, and a battalion of symbiotes to save the world.
This movie is a bit of a mixed bag for me, as I thoroughly enjoyed the action, the humor, and seeing a whole variety of symbiotes with pretty unique designs, color variations, and abilities. Throughout the Venom series, we'd only gotten to see three symbiotes: Venom, Riot, and Carnage. So, for this movie to showcase a lot more symbiotes, and for all of them to be unique in their overall designs, is pretty cool. The acting, for the most part, is pretty decent as well. Tom Hardy as Eddie/Venom is, as always, a ton of fun, and the likes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, and Clark Backo were all excellent as well. I also enjoyed seeing Stephen Graham's return, and for him to also be hosting a symbiote in this movie.
Unfortunately, I wasn't really a fan of Rhys Ifans and Alanna Ubach's characters. I don't know, I just thought that the inclusion of a alien-obsessed hippie family was kind of unnecessary. Also, Andy Serkis as Knull isn't quite the looming threat he's set up to be throughout the movie. Also, despite their design being like something out of an Eldritch horror, I thought that the Xenophages were way too overpowered for my taste.
But, it's in the main conflict and the pacing where this movie comes apart for me. Not to the extent that I hated it, but just to the point where it wasn't an absolute win in my eyes. The minute the main conflict is set up, you can pretty much see how the movie is going to end. Also, the pacing was a bit all over the place, being too breakneck for one sequence, and slow as mud the next. Now, I will give Kelly Marcel props on the writing for this movie, but I think that she needed more experience as a director before taking on a project like this.
Now, is this the worst movie of the year? No. Is it as unwatchable or disappointing as Morbius or Madame Web? No. Is it simply an adequate send-off for Tom Hardy's run as Eddie Brock/Venom? Yes. So, I'm giving Venom: The Last Dance a rating of 3.85/5.
Okay, guys, this is Chuck signing off, and HallowScream will continue next with Scared Shrekless.
