HallowScream - Helluva Boss (2020-present)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, October is here, which means it's officially time for HallowScream. And, what better way to kick things off than with a review I promised back when I reviewed Hazbin Hotel. That's right, we're kicking off HallowScream with my review of Helluva Boss, created by Vivienne Medrano for her YouTube channel Vivziepop. The series features the voice talents of Brandon Rogers, Richard Horvitz, Vivian Nixon, Erica Lindbeck, Bryce Pinkham, and Alex Brightman, with recurring and guest voices including the likes of Cristina Vee, Jinkx Monsoon, Mara Wilson, Kesha, Barrett Wilbert Weed, James Monroe Iglehart, Michael Cusack, Faye Mata, Monica Franco, and the list goes on.

So, Helluva Boss is set in, well, Hell, and follows the adventures of an imp named Blitzø (the "o" is silent) and his crew at I.M.P. (Immediate Murder Professionals). Along with Blitzø are his employees Moxxie and Millie, a married imp couple, and Blitzø's adopted hellhound daughter Loona. Also, Blitzø and the crew of I.M.P. deal with goetial demon prince Stolas, his teenage daughter Octavia, and a former friend of Blitzø named Fizzarolli, who is rolling with Asmodeus, the lord of Lust. Also, Blitzø's ex-girlfriend and pop idol Verosika Mayday makes a few appearances here and there, as do Blitzø's father Cash Buckzo, Moxxie's mobster father Crimson, and an imp mercenary named Striker.

The main goal of Blitzø and the rest of I.M.P. is to act as killers for hire, killing targets in the human world for a client who was sent to Hell. The first episode sees former school teacher Mrs. Mayberry, who went to Hell after killing her cheating husband, and ultimately herself, but failed to kill Martha, the woman Mrs. Mayberry's husband was cheating with. So, Mrs. Mayberry hires I.M.P. to kill Martha and her family. Hilariously, in a later episode, we see that Martha and Mrs. Mayberry actually hooked up in Hell. Also, in one of a set of Helluva Boss shorts, Blitzø gets more than he bargained for when he goes after a target named Emberlynn Pinkle, who ends up become obsessively attracted to Blitzø. Awkward...

The performances throughout the series are pretty fun. Brandon Rogers as Blitzø is easily the highlight of the series, and his antics are some of the funniest things I've seen in an animated series in years. Richard Horvitz and Vivian Nixon as Moxxie and Millie work really well together, and they play up how adorable the two are as a couple with seamless ease. I also really enjoy Erica Lindbeck as Loona and Alex Brightman as Fizzarolli, with Bryce Pinkham's Stolas being a ton of fun. As far as recurring and guest characters, Mara Wilson as Mrs. Mayberry, Cristina Vee as Verosika Mayday, and most recently Monica Franco as Emberlynn are a lot of fun.

The animation style is pretty much the same as with Hazbin Hotel, and it's a style that feels very reminiscent of a classic Cartoon Network series called The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, and what's hilarious is that the creator of said series, Maxwell Atoms, has provided voice work on both Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel. Cool. And, in a lot of ways, Helluva Boss is the kind of show for adults who grew up on the likes of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Courage the Cowardly Dog. That kind of bizarre, outlandish animated horror comedy that is equally as creepy as it is funny. And, the series makes it clear at the start of each episode that it's intended for an adult audience, as it all starts with a content warning for "graphic violence, strong language, sexual themes, flashing lights, as well as rampant demon horniness." And, Helluva Boss has all of those things in abundance.

Honestly, I can't think of one person that's watched Helluva Boss and not laughed their asses off. It's easily one of the funniest running shows on YouTube, and I give it a rating of 5/5. As of now, there are seventeen full episodes and four shorts, with more episodes on the way, as well as future seasons in development. And, yes, I am looking forward to it.

Anyway, guys, this is Chuck signing out, and HallowScream will continue next time with the '90s classic Casper.
