Review - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Tim Burton is officially back with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long overdue sequel to his 1980's supernatural comedy classic Beetlejuice. Returning cast members include Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara, and they are joined by Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Jenna Ortega, Danny DeVito, Santiago Cabrera, and Willem Dafoe.

So, the movie sees Lydia Deetz return to the small town of Winter River, where she, her teenage daughter Astrid, and stepmother Delia all mourn the passing of Lydia's father Charles Deetz. Unfortunately, the ghost with the most, Betelgeuse, is back, and things start going really wild. How? You gotta see the movie to find that out.

Okay, so the humor is absolute gut-busting levels of hilarious, but it's also insanely crass and crude. Pretty much on point with the humor in the original Beetlejuice. Just a warning for those who aren't comfortable with that style of humor in their movies. But, yes, for long-time fans of Beetlejuice, that irrelevant, crass and crude humor that made the original so damn funny is very unapologetically present in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Also, the mix of digital effects, particularly for the sandworms, with practical effects for the makeup and prosthetics, which were done brilliantly by the one and only Neal Scanlan, were also very on point with the first movie. And, of course, Danny Elfman is back with yet another iconic score that evolves the music from the original movie.

The performances, on the other hand, are a bit of a mixed bag. Michael Keaton, of course, is as crass and crude as Betelgeuse as he was in the original, and we get much more screen time with him by comparison to the first movie. Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara also get a lot of screen time together throughout the movie, and their chemistry is definitely improved over their chemistry from the original. Willem Dafoe was absolutely hilarious as an actor who is now a detective in the afterlife. Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter Astrid was easily a highlight, and I liked how the two became estranged after the unfortunate death of Astrid's father Richard, played to likeable perfection by Santiago Cabrera. Unfortunately, it's Justin Theroux as Rory, Lydia's producer and boyfriend, and Monica Bellucci as Delores, Betelgeuse's ex-wife who is a soul-sucking hell bitch, that were among my least favorites in the movie, as these are two actors of veritable skill, and they are both underutilized. Although, I will admit that I liked the makeup for Delores, with the stapled together look. Kinda reminds me of Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas or Emily from Corpse Bride

Overall, this is a movie for fans of Tim Burton and of the original Beetlejuice. It's definitely going to get viewers in the right mood for spooky season, and especially for Halloween. Is it for everyone? No, but it's still an overall fun time. I'm giving Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a rating of 4/5.

Okay, guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I will be back soon.
