Review - Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Deadpool & Wolverine is the latest film from Marvel Studios, and is the third Deadpool film overall. The movie is directed by Shawn Levy, and stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and many, many more.

So, the movie follows Wade Wilson/Deadpool, as he is nabbed by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), who inform him that his Earth is in trouble, as its anchor point, Logan/Wolverine, gave his life. So,.Wade traverses the multiverse in an attempt to find a variant of Wolverine to join him as the new anchor point to his Earth, this saving his friends and loved ones. There's a lot more I want to say about the plot, but I don't want to spoil too much.

Where do I start? The plot is a nonsensical mess, but that's par for the course of a Deadpool movie. Most fans are pretty much aware that the plot of a Deadpool movie is just the means to serve a bunch of in-jokes and fourth-wall breaking. And, there's a ton of both in abundance. Tons of fourth-wall breaking, not-so-subtle digs at the recent shortcomings of Marvel Studios, and raunchy, grotesque humor that fans of the Deadpool movies love.

The movie's two central characters, Deadpool and Wolverine, play off each other perfectly. It's clear that this was something that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been wanting to do for years, and it took until now for it to happen. And, it was awesome to finally see Hugh Jackman in a comic accurate Wolverine suit. It only took us twenty-four years to see it happen. Damn.

The two other performances that stand out are Matthew Macfayden as Mr. Paradox, who is a TVA agent who pretty much gets the entire plot of the movie going, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, a powerful psychic and twin sister of Charles Xavier. The performances of both Macfayden and Corrin were really good, as they both had motivations, but also shortcomings that lead to their downfall. Also, I gotta give props to Aaron Stanford as John Allerdyce/Pyro, who gets a bit more to do than he did in films like X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. There are other characters that appear, as well as surprising variants of both Deadpool and Wolverine, but I don't want to spoil them here. Unfortunately, the main supporting players from the first two Deadpool movies really have no role except to bookend the movie, and serve merely as Wade's motivation.

All in all, this movie is an absolute love letter to a time in Marvel movies long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A time where Marvel movies were made by different filmmakers at different studios, and toyed with different storytelling styles, but didn't always work. Now, while this is gonna make Marvel Studios, and parent company Disney, a ton of money,. it's not the saving grace of the MCU that so many claim it's going to be. Nevertheless, I loved Deadpool & Wolverine, and I'm giving it a rating of 5/5. And, yes, this movie absolutely EARNS its R-rating.

Honestly, the funniest part of the movie is in how it so mercilessly mocks Marvel's failings with the multiverse. But, in my next review, I'll see discussing an event that KNEW how to best utilize the multiverse: the DC/CW crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths.
