Review - Cowboy Bebop (1998)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and this is my review of Cowboy Bebop, the 1998 anime series created by Shinichirō Watanabe, and produced by Sunrise.

The series is set in the distant future, where humanity has colonized space. However, there are still outlaws and criminals, this necessitating a need for bounty hunters known as Cowboys. Enter Spike Spiegel and Jet Black, two bounty hunters aboard a spaceship called the Bebop. Throughout the series, Spike and Jet are joined by others, such as Faye Valentine, a kickass woman with no memory of her past before reawakening from a fifty-four year cryosleep, Radical Ed, a teen genius and eccentric youth, and Ein the Welsh Corgi.

Also, throughout the series is a television series regarding various bounties throughout the galaxy, with the series being hosted by Punch and Judy, who are a fun source of comedic relief on occasion. But, a recurring threat comes in the form of Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, of which Spike was formerly involved with. The main antagonist, Vicious, is a key member of the Syndicate, and was once friends with Spike. However, their friendship deteriorated due to Julia, Vicious' girlfriend who had an affair with Spike.

The action and humor of Cowboy Bebop is absolutely fantastic. I especially get a laugh with the mannerisms and manner of speech that we get from Ed, as her nature is very kooky and a ton of fun. The music by Yoko Kanno is very jazz heavy, with lots of brass instruments and guitar mixed together. The vehicle designs, especially for the Bebop, genuinely stand out as some of the most unique ship designs in science fiction.

All in all, I have next to nothing negative to say about the anime Cowboy Bebop. If you're a fan of sci-fi, space westerns, or anime, then definitely give this one a watch. It gets done in twenty-six episodes what sci-fi series like Star Trek: Discovery barely accomplished over five seasons: a competently written and well executed story that's just a ton of fun. I'm giving Cowboy Bebop a rating of 5/5.

Okay, guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next in my review of Pokémon Concierge.
