Review - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got back from seeing a brand new movie currently playing in theaters. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, is based on the popular tabletop fantasy RPG Dungeons & Dragons, primarily taking its basis in the Forgotten Realms campaign, and more specifically on the online MMORPG Neverwinter. This movie stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant.

So, the central character of this movie is a former member of the Harpers named Edgin Darvis, who makes a prison escape along with his closest friend and ally Holga Kilgore. Together, the two seek to reunite with Edgin's daughter, Kira, who has been the ward of their former ally Forge Fitzwilliam, who has since become Lord of Neverwinter, and is allied with a Red Wizard named Sofina. And what's more, a relic that Edgin was attempting to steal years before is now in the vault in Neverwinter, which is magically sealed.

So, along with their old ally Simon the sorcerer, as well as new allies like Doric the Tiefling druid and Xenk Yendar the Paladin, will Edgin and Holga stop Forge and Sofina and rescue Kira? You're just going to have to see this movie to find out.

Now, I gotta admit that I've never played Dungeons & Dragons before. I was always more of a World of Warcraft kind of guy, to be honest. But, that said, I frickin loved this movie. Honestly, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein clearly knew what they were doing when they set out to make this movie, and it honestly feels exactly like a DnD campaign brought to life on the big screen.

The performances by the cast were fantastic, and Hugh Grant was delightfully heinous as Forge in this movie. Both Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez were fantastic as Edgin and Holga. And I loved the hilarious banter between the two of them. Seriously, their chemistry makes you feel like they've been working together for a long time. Both Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis were also phenomenal as Simon and Doric, I definitely enjoyed Rege-Jean Page as Xenk in the minimal amount of time he was on screen.

The setting and the environment was fantastic. Honestly, I don't think that even Game of Thrones looked this good even in its best seasons. And, of course, the creature effects and the magic effects were fantastic as well. Seriously, I think that everyone involved took real care in how every aspect of the universe of Dungeons & Dragons was portrayed on screen. Even the music score by Lorne Balfe was really good.

Honestly guys, this year has started out with a real dry spell of phenomenal movies. However, along with both Creed III and John Wick Chapter 4, this movie is one of the best of the year so far. I'm giving Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves a rating of 5/5. Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
