Review - Lightyear (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and this is my review of Pixar's latest movie Lightyear starring Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, and James Brolin.

The movie actually opens with a text that tells us about how Andy's Buzz Lightyear toy from the Toy Story movies was based on a character in a sci-fi movie that exists within the universe of Toy Story, and the movie we're watching is that very movie.

So, the movie itself focuses on the titular space ranger Buzz Lightyear, who inadvertently leads the various crew members on an exploratory vessel stranded on an uncharted planet, and Buzz, along with his friend Commander Hawthorne, work to achieve hyperspace and return everyone home, this completing their mission objective. Unfortunately, the more Buzz attempts the hyperspace launch, the further into the future he goes, until he arrives in a future where the crew, and their descendants, are forced to contend with an army of invading alien robots under the command of Zurg, whom Buzz, along with Hawthorne's granddaughter and two other misfits, must defeat in order to save everyone.

Okay, so I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. This premise isn't the most original in terms of sci-fi, as we've seen concepts like it in projects like Lost in Space, Farscape, and so on. However, I will admit that having the robots only capable of saying the name "Zurg" was pretty clever. Now, while Tim Allen's iconic voice was definitely missed, I did enjoy Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, as well as James Brolin as Zurg. The rest of the voice cast, which includes the likes of Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, Efren Ramirez, Bill Hader, Uzo Aduba, and Isiah Whitlock Jr., all do a good job as well.

Overall, while this movie is definitely as par-the-course in the sci-fi genre, I definitely think it works well for younger kids and is definitely a visual treat for the eyes with spectacular splashes of color throughout the movie. I'm giving Lightyear a rating of 3.95/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
