Review - Once Upon a Deadpool (2018)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, as promised, and with 12 Reviews of Christmas kicking off this Sunday, I'm taking a look at Once Upon a Deadpool. Upon the release of the trailer for this particular Deadpool title, many fans were confused, as many believed it was a possible Deadpool 3, but that wasn't the case. It turned out to actually be a PG-13 re-cut of Deadpool 2 with the more gory violence and R-rated dialogue toned down, and a new narrative framing device added in its place. Now, I'm not going to discuss the plot, as I already did that in my Deadpool 2 review, so let's talk about the framing device the added to this version of Deadpool 2.

The framing device in question is a re-creation of the bedroom scenes from The Princess Bride, where a sick boy, played by Fred Savage, is read the story of The Princess Bride by his grandfather, played by Peter Falk. This time, however, we have an adult Fred Savage, as himself, taped to the bed with duct tape and told the story of Deadpool 2 by Deadpool himself. And Deadpool has a censor remote to bleep out more R-rated words, due to this version being PG-13.

So, is Once Upon a Deadpool worth it? Well, it depends on your point of view. In my opinion, it worked well as a mid-December charity drive by 20th Century Fox, as 1% of ticket proceeds during its twelve days in movie theaters, and later on 1% of the proceeds from Blu-ray purchases during the first month on store shelves, would go to the F*ck Cancer charity movement. If you aren't aware of this charity, it's one that Arrow lead actor Stephen Amell is heavily involved with, and is one that Ryan Reynolds wanted a percentage of proceeds for this PG-13 re-cut of Deadpool 2 to go to. So, as a yuletide charity drive, Once Upon a Deadpool works well. However, the charity part is unfortunately over, but Once Upon a Deadpool, which I'm giving a rating of 4.5/5 to, is still available on Blu-ray and definitely worth it just for the added scenes with Deadpool and Fred Savage. Those scenes alone are the highlight of this cut of Deadpool 2. Well, this is Chuck signing off. Join me this Sunday for the official start of 12 Reviews of Christmas
