12 Reviews of Christmas - The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special (2020)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, it looks like I'm heading back into the world of Star Wars with this recently released special: The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. A tribute/parody of the original Star Wars Holiday Special from back in the '70s, this Disney+ exclusive is set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and revisits iconic moments from across the Star Wars movies, as well as The Mandalorian. So, as part of 12 Reviews of Christmas, let's take a look at The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special

The special starts off with Poe, Rose, Finn, Rey, Chewbacca, and co. getting ready for a party to celebrate Life Day, which is a holiday in the Star Wars universe. Meanwhile, Rey is struggling to train Finn in the ways of the Jedi. However, she finds a clue to the location of a Force relic called "the key," which is a gem that a Force user can use to travel across both space and time. Rey and BB-8 use the key to revisit iconic moments across films like The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Rey sees her master, Luke, being trained by the likes of Obi-Wan and Yoda, and is confronted by Darth Vader, who seeks the key on behalf of the Emperor, leading to a time-hopping confrontation between Rey and Vader, which includes the podrace from The Phantom Menace, a confrontation between Din Djarin (The Mandalorian) and some Stormtroopers during the events of The Mandalorian, meaning the troopers are after Grogu (Baby Yoda), and so many other events across the Star Wars series. After a confrontation between Star Wars heroes and Villains, Vader gets the key and takes it back to the Emperor, while Rey contemplates her failures as a Jedi and a teacher.

Meanwhile, Finn, Rose, and Poe are getting ready for the Life Day party, and almost nothing is going right. Poe burns the tip-yip in an attempt to roast it. However, Lando, Max Rebo, Zorii, and other friends arrive and the party starts to go off without any more problems, and Lando gets a new cape from a Mon Calamari friend. Meanwhile, back at the Force Temple, Yoda's ghost shows Rey a vision of past Jedi master/apprentice duos, such a Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan and Anakin, and so forth, and shows that aside from being students and teachers, these duos were also friends. Rey, after realizing her mistakes, heads to retrieve the key from the Emperor, who has used it to take on Kylo Ren as his new apprentice. After a confrontation between Rey and Luke against Kylo Ren and Vader, Kylo is sent back to his own time, everything is set back to normal, and Rey heads back to celebrate Life Day with her friends.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, while not perfect, is entertaining. I like how it revisits the different Star Wars movies, and includes a reference to The Mandalorian. One down side, however, is that many of the film actors don't return to reprise their roles here. Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels are the only Star Wars actors to return. Aside from that, the plot is very kid-friendly and easy to follow. Overall, a decent special, despite lacking a majority of the main cast, I'm giving The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special a rating of 4.25/5. This is Chuck signing off. 12 Reviews of Christmas continues tomorrow with Batman Returns
