Review - Wonka's The Golden Ticket (2026)

       Hey guys, Chuck here. Say, have you ever dreamed about getting to visit a real life version of Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory? Well, twelve teams of adult pairs got the.golden opportunity to do so in a new reality competition series currently streaming on Netflix called Wonka's The Golden Ticket. 

      So, the series starts off with the reveal that twelve Golden Tickets were sent out, and collected by twelve adults, who were allowed to bring a friend or relative to compete with them for a grand prize of $3 million. And, I will say it was a nice touch to have Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie in the film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory open a Wonka Bar that DOESN'T contain a Golden Ticket and remark "Not this time, Wonka " 

       Each episode features several challenges, all with brilliant recreations of things we loved from the original film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. For instance, after everyone signs a giant liability contract, each pair heads off into the shrinking hallway, where a gumball machine with purple and gold gumballs are sitting. Those that eat the purple gumballs are allowed to board the Wonkavator, while those that eat the gold gumballs go poof. Aboard the Wonkavator, the remaining players accidentally exceed capacity, and one has to step off. The remaining players enter and enjoy the Chocolate Room, which looks simply stunning and serves as a central hub throughout the competition. The Chocolate Room challenge involves a set of gold coins, three of which can be used to free a player that ate a gold gumball from being trapped in a giant gumball in a giant gumball machine. But, any player left in the giant machine would be out of the competition. And, that's just the first challenge. 

        The competitions within the Wonka Factory are recreations of what's been featured in the original film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, including WonkaVision featuring celebrity guest hosts, Lickable Wallpaper, and so forth. And, I am glad that Netflix chose to base this competition on the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, as it's the most iconic, most beloved, and most well known adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic book. And, with the decision to base the Wonka Factory on the classic version from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory comes the classic looks of the Oompa Loompas, with one original Oompa Loompa from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, an Oompa Loompa named Rusty, coming back for the show. And, for what is his final performance before retirement, I loved seeing actor Rusty Goffe reprise his role as Rusty the Oompa Loompa. 

          The most frequently used challenge throughout Wonka's The Golden Ticket is WonkaVision, which sees competitors be challenged in games inspired by iconic game shows with a celebrity guest host. For instance, the first WonkaVision challenge is the "Wheel of Misfortune," hosted by Nick Cannon, with the second being "Bubble Jeopardy," which involves the exploding gum and is hosted by Howie Mandel, and the third is "Steal or No Steal," which involves the classic Golden Eggs and hosted by Wayne Brady. 

          And yet, there's more to Wonka: The Golden Ticket than just the challenges in the Wonka factory. Similar to such reality competition series like Big Brother and Survivor, there's also a social game, with alliances, backstabbing, and absolutely comfortable and delectable living quarters for the competitors. And, as the episodes go on, one or more competitors are "terminated from the tour," which means they're tenure in the competition is ended. And, sometimes, that means that duos are broken up. But, to see the interactions between the competitors 

        But, we need to discuss the biggest elephant in the room when it comes to Wonka's The Golden Ticket. Yes, it was confirmed that the creators of the series did, indeed utilize AI tools to recreate the voice of the late Gene Wilder for the role of Willy Wonka. Now, while I am glad that they got the consent of the late actor's wife, Karen, to do so, it still feels kinda effed up. But, the show is based primarily around Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, so it wouldn't make sense to use any other version of Wonka than Gene Wilder. And, at least Wilder's wife gave her consent first. 

       As far as the competitors go, many of them were very likeable, and it's a brilliant mix of duos. We have a couple of father/daughter duos, a mother/daughter duo, a mother/son duo, and grandfather/grandson duo (nice), pairs of siblings, a boyfriend/girlfriend duo, and so forth. Easily my favorite duo, especially early on, was the father/daughter duo of Jeff and Ava, but, admittedly, I also enjoyed Bryce and Taylor, the boyfriend/girlfriend duo, and the duo of Gabrielle and Sasha. And, I gotta give a shout to the duo of Austin and Ziad for playing one hell of a game. 

       Now, I'm not going to spoil the winner here, because it would definitely ruin the surprise of who wins Wonka's competition. All I will say is this: of you enjoy competition game shows with a social game, and are a fan of the world of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, then hop onto Netflix and watch Wonka's The Golden Ticket. It's a lot of fun, and thoroughly entertaining. Just don't be dissuaded by the fact that Gene Wilder's voice was recreated with AI tools.
