Breakdown - Marvel Studios' SDCC '24 Reveals

Hey guys, Chuck here. San Diego Comic-Con went on this weekend, and Saturday evening saw Marvel Studios on stage in Hall H, where they finally put a lot of fan concerns at ease with some spectacular reveals. Not many, but definitely some exciting ones, to be sure.

Okay, starting off with the first Marvel film of 2025: Captain America: Brave New World. A few details got revealed about the movie, which confirms the identity of the main villain, being portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, is Serpent Society leader Sidewinder. This means that the Serpent Society does, indeed, have a role in the movie. Also, Marvel is, at last, listening to fans and addressing the giant Celestial sticking out of the ocean, as we saw in the climax of Eternals. Evidently, the dead remains of the Celestial, Tiamat, will be the source of the most powerful metal in the Marvel universe: adamantium. Interesting, to say the least, and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Captain America: Brave New World will be in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Next, we have the wrap-up movie of Phase Five: Thunderbolts*. And, yes, the asterisk is part of the actual title of the movie. Anyway, the first look was shown in Hall H. However, I wasn't there, as I did not attend Comic-Con. So, I will have to wait until the trailer releases online officially. But, it could be interesting, as we're getting new suits for many of the lead characters, so we'll see how it turns out. Thunderbolts* is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2025. Next up is Marvel's reboot of the Fantastic Four with the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The movie is getting ready to start filming, and will have both Galactus and a female version of Silver Surfer as the major threats, as portrayed by Ralph Ineson and Julia Garner. The main foursome of Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm will be portrayed, respectively, by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will kick off Phase Six on July 25, 2025.

But, now, the big announcements of Marvel's presentation were regarding the next two Avengers films. Well, it's officially been confirmed that both films will be directed by the returning Anthony and Joe Russo, the brothers who previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame for Marvel Studios. Also, writer Stephen McFeely is returning as writer, replacing previous writer Michael Waldron. The names of these films? Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in May of 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, set for release in May of 2027. And, evidently, the Fantastic Four will have a role to play in both Avengers films.

Hey, wait a minute. Avengers: Doomsday? As in Doctor Doom? Yes, indeed, Marvel has decided to move away from Kang the Conqueror being the main antagonist of the next Avengers film after the dismissal of actor Jonathan Majors, and will instead pit Earth's Mightiest Heroes against Victor Von Doom. And, the biggest shocker of the night: Doctor Doom will be portrayed by none other than Robert Downey Jr. Yes, indeed, the man who kicked off the MCU as Tony Stark in Iron Man will now be taking on the villainous role of Victor Von Doom.

Honestly, I'm definitely a lot more excited for what Marvel has coming, especially with that banger announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. But, we still have D23 coming up, so we'll see what else Kevin Feige has up his sleeve for Marvel. Is Marvel truly back, or is all of this just a last act of desperation from a once powerhouse studio brought low by poor mandates made by former Disney boss Bob Chapek? Only time will tell. But, that's all we got from Marvel Studios at Comic-Con, and that'll do for now. I'll see you guys tomorrow with my next review.
