Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2023

Hey guys, Chuck here, and we've reached the end of 2023, which means it's time to count down the best movies of an otherwise rough year. And, I mean it, 2023 was a rough year, predominantly because of the Hollywood Labor Disputes, which have luckily been resolved. But, even in a rough year, there were some bright spots at the box office. So, I'm here to talk about my ten favorites of the year. This is my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2023

And, before we get to the Top 10, a few honorable mentions: The Super Mario Bros. Movie: a massive success, and a fan-favorite adaptation of Nintendo's flagship franchise; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: a fantastic animated movie that gives a surprising new spin on the heroes in a half shell; Blue Beetle: the penultimate film of the DCEU had great humor, great action, and made me a fan of the character Jaime Reyes; Gran Turismo: arguably one of the best video game movies of the year, director Neill Blomkamp delivers on the true story of Jann Mardenborough; Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One: Tom Cruise's latest outing as Ethan Hunt was filled with action and thrills, and a gripping story about advanced A.I.

Okay, so with those out of the way, here are my ten favorite movies of 2023.

#10 - A Haunting in Venice: Definitely an improvement over last year's Death on the Nile, the third of director Kenneth Branagh's films in the world of Agatha Christie was a unique mix of murder mystery and supernatural thriller.

#9 - Thanksgiving: Eli Roth's new horror film takes the concept from his fake trailer in Grindhouse and delivers an enjoyable and festive horror experience, perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday.

#8 - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes: Francis Lawrence returns to Panem in this entertaining prequel story to The Hunger Games, with stellar performances by lead stars Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.

#7 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: James Gunn's final outing for Marvel Studios was arguably the most fun Marvel Studios project of the year.

#6 - Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse: A sequel to the already successful Into the Spiderverse, Miles Morales returns in one of my personal favorite animated films of the year.

#5 - John Wick Chapter Four: Keanu Reeves' fourth outing as the assassin John Wick is easily the most fun entry of the franchise, with tense drama and epic action.

#4 - Five Nights at Freddy's: Universal and Blumhouse took the popular survival horror game that took the Internet by storm and made one of the most phenomenal horror films of the year.

#3 - Godzilla Minus One: Toho's newest Godzilla film goes beyond the typical monster mayhem of the franchise and delivers a fantastic character driven story about a man dealing with survivor's guilt, and looking to protect those he cares about.

#2 - Wonka: Director Paul King delivered a very sweet, delightful origin story of Willy Wonka, performed brilliantly by actor Timothee Chalamet.

#1 - Oppenheimer: Easily the best film in the career of director Christopher Nolan, this visually gripping story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project, the Trinity test, and so forth was easily the best movie I saw in the theaters this year.

And, there you have it. My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2023. And, honestly, I was surprised at just which movies actually made the cut and which ones didn't. Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off, have a great New Year, and I'll see you guys next time with my Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2024
