Review - The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and this is my review of the brand new film from Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo: The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Based on Nintendo's world-famous game franchise, this marks the second feature film based on Super Mario Bros. in thirty years.

So, the movie centers on brothers Mario and Luigi, who gets sucked through a tube and into a unique world. Whilst Luigi gets taken in to a dark land, only to be captured by the forces of the evil Bowser, Mario ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, where a local named Toad takes Mario to Princess Peach. Peach, along with Mario and Toad, teams up with the Kongs to take down Bowser, rescue Luigi, and save the world.

Okay, so the animation in this movie is fantastic. Not only does it feel exactly like the video game, but the variety of scenic elements and characters featured throughout the games are present in the movie. Bob-Omb, Boo, Bullet Bills, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys, even Yoshi and his race are very present throughout the movie, and it's fantastic. I also liked the nods to games like Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, and Luigi's Mansion.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are both excellent as Mario and Luigi, and I thoroughly enjoyed Jack Black and Seth Rogen as Bowser and Donkey Kong. And, both Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan Michael Key were excellent as Peach and Toad. And, unlike the Angry Birds movies where the voice cast was distracting, the voice cast in this movie absolutely works.

Overall, this movie is really good. Definitely skews towards a more family friendly audience, but I think that gamers and Mario fans will definitely be satisfied with the movie. I'm giving The Super Mario Bros. Movie a rating of 4.65/5.

Alrighty guys, this is Chuck signing off and I'll see you guys next time.
