Review - John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here and I just got back from seeing the new movie John Wick: Chapter 4, the latest entry in the popular John Wick franchise. Director Chad Stahelski returns as director for this movie, which stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Skarsgard, Clancy Brown, Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Natalia Tena, Shamier Anderson, Marko Zaror, Scott Adkins, and Rina Sawayama.

So, still excommunicado, John Wick goes on a hair raising adventure to take apart the High Table. Unfortunately, a new figure has risen up at the High Table known as the Marquis Vincent de Gramont. The Marquis de Gramont has one goal: destroy the image of John Wick. With help from his friends the Bowery King, Winston, and even his adoptive sister Katia, John Wick traverses from Osaka to New York to Berlin and finally to Paris to finally earn his freedom from the High Table.

Now, this movie marks the first in the John Wick franchise I got to see in a theater, and it's definitely worth it. The action is nonstop, the pacing is superspeed, but it's an absolute thrill ride from start to finish. Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Laurence Fishburne all reprise their roles from the previous John Wick movies, and all three are absolutely fantastic. Now, tragically, Lance Reddick has recently passed away, making this one of his last film roles. But, for how much we got to see him here, he was great once again, and he is a talent that will be missed.

Among the new additions to the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed Hiroyuki Sanada and Rina Sawayama as a father/daughter duo overseeing the Osaka Continental. Both definitely are fantastic to watch and I enjoyed seeing them kick all kinds of ass in their segment of the movie. Donnie Yen as Caine, a blind assassin and friend of John, is absolutely fantastic. I honestly loved seeing this guy in movies like Rogue One and xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Honestly, this guy is always a joy to watch in these kinds of kickass action movies.

Bill Skarsgard, who of course is most famous for playing Pennywise the Clown in the most recent It movies, was definitely a unique villain as the Marquis de Gramont. Now, while I still prefer Michael Nyqvist as Viggo as far as John Wick villains go, Skarsgard definitely brings a different dynamic to the world of John Wick, making him arguably the most dangerous opponent John Wick has has to contend with. Alongside the Marquis de Gramont are Clancy Brown as the Harbinger and Marko Zaror as Chidi. Both actors are fantastic, with the former being a very reserved representative of the High Table, and the other being an unstoppable machine out to make John Wick's life a living hell.

There's a lot I want to say about this movie, but I don't want to spoil anything. Simply put, if you love action movies, and if you've enjoyed the first three John Wick movies, then this is a must-see, and quite honestly the best movie of the entire John Wick franchise. Much like the first three movies, I'm giving John Wick: Chapter 4 a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
