Throwback Thursday - A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, it's once again Throwback Thursday here on Chuck's Movie Breakdown, and well, I'd like to take a look at a classic special this week. In fact, it's a personal favorite of mine. This week, we'll be discussing A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

Before we get started, I'd like to let you guys know that there will be NO Throwback Thursday next Thursday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. So, in lieu of posting a Throwback Thursday review on Thanksgiving, I decided to post two reviews today. This one is the first, and the second, which is my review of Frozen, will be posted later on. After next Thursday, scheduling should be back to normal until at lest mid-December, but I'll get into that when the time comes. With all that out of the way, let's get started. Her we go: A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

So the special, which was one of many holiday specials that Charles M. Schulz created with the iconic Peanuts characters, opens on Charlie Brown being convinced by Lucy to try and kick a football while she holds it for him. As always, she pulls the football away, which sends him flying up into the air, and crashing  down on his back. OUCH! The main story of the special, however, focuses on Charlie Brown and his sister Sally, who are about to head over to their grandmother's place for Thanksgiving. Just as they're getting ready to leave, Charlie Brown gets a call from his friend Peppermint Patty, who invites herself, Marcie, and Franklin over to his place for Thanksgiving, even though he's not going to be there. Taking the suggestion from his best friend Linus, Charlie Brown proceeds to make a Thanksgiving meal for himself and his friends that they can enjoy before he and Sally have to go to their grandmother's place.

After a sequence of Charlie Brown's dog, Snoopy, putting together a table and chairs for the meal, we see a montage of Charlie Brown, Linus, and Snoopy making the meal, which consists of buttered toast, popcorn, pretzel sticks, and candy. When Patty and the others arrive, she is annoyed by the lame meal that was put together. After being talked to about the situation by Marcie, who also talks to an upset Charlie Brown, the two make amends, and after calling his grandmother, he gets the okay to bring all of his friends along for Thanksgiving dinner. After we see the star of the car ride to Charlie Brown's grandmother's, we end the special with Snoopy and his little bird friend, Woodstock, having a Thanksgiving dinner of their own.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite Peanuts special. The reason I enjoy it so much is that, much like the Christmas one, the message is simple and it shows the true meaning behind the Thanksgiving holiday. As a kid, I looked forward to watching it on TV every year in November on ABC, and now I can enjoy it any time I want to on Blu-ray. Simple story, loveable characters, and hummable music throughout. I give A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
