Review - Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, it's 4/20 today, and after talking about Rebel Moon - Part Two yesterday, I really need a bit of a pallette cleanser. So, here's my review of the 2019 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, released in 2019, written and directed by Kevin Smith, and starring Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Harley Quinn Smith, Aparna Brielle, Shannon Elizabeth, Fred Armisen, Rosario Dawson, Jason Lee, Craig Robinson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Jericho, and so many others.

So, the movie opens with Jay and Silent Bob getting arrested for running an illegal pot shop disguised as a fried chicken eatery called, I shit you not, "The Cock Smoker." In court, a lawyer has them sign some papers, and gets them off the hook, saying that they were hired by a movie studio to run a promotional pop-up for an upcoming movie. And, shortly after, said lawyer reveals a cease and desist against Jay and Silent Bob, as he ACTUALLY represents Saban Films, who acquired ownership of Bluntman and Chronic Strike Back for a low price on Craigslist, and therefore own the trademark on the names Jay and Silent Bob. Therefore, Jay and Silent Bob can no longer self-identity as Jay and Silent Bob.

At their friend Brodie's comic book store, now set up in the mall from Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob learn that Saban Films is preparing to make a reboot Bluntman and Chronic movie called Bluntman v. Chronic, an obvious nod to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. And, Bluntman v. Chronic is set to star Val Kilmer as Bluntman, Melissa Benoist as Chronic, and will be directed by Kevin Smith, who will be appearing at the upcoming Chronic Con in Hollywood to film a key scene for the movie. So, the premise of the movie is pretty much set: Jay and Silent Bob need to head to Hollywood, where Chronic Con is being held, and stop Kevin Smith from finishing Bluntman v. Chronic and get their names back.

The journey Jay and Silent Bob go on takes them on a ride share with a guy named Todd Merkinsky, who Jay calls Merkin, and we eventually see Jay reunite with Justice, who had a daughter named Milly (full name Millennium Faulkner), who along with her friends Jihad, Sopapilla, and Shan Yu manages to join Jay and Silent Bob on their trip to Chronic Con. And, it turns out that Jay is Milly's father. Whoops. So much insanity, including a KKK rally (with the Grand Wizard being played by Chris Jericho), and they eventually do make it to Chronic Con.

Chronic Con has a whole slew of nods to Kevin Smith's career, with reunion panels for both Clerks and Comic Book Men, as well as a panel with both Jason Biggs and James Van Der Beek (who starred in the original Bluntman and Chronic movie from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), and Jay and Silent Bob reunite with Holden McNeil, who is a guest of honor. Holden reveals that he is a co-parent of a little girl, Amy, with Alyssa Jones. And, in spite of his past works being revisited with Bluntman and Chronic getting a cinematic reboot, and Chasing Amy getting an adaptation on Netflix, Holden is more intrigued at being a parent. And, he gives Jay and Silent Bob some passes to get into the Kevin Smith panel for Bluntman v. Chronic

During the panel, Jay and Silent Bob see footage from the reboot, and it's so much better than the original Bluntman and Chronic movie. And, they manage to swap the real Kevin Smith with Silent Bob, and he and Milly call the rest of her friends to the stage, where Shan Yu reveals that she's secretly a Russian spy sent to infiltrate an American pop culture convention. Jay finally reveals the truth to Milly about him being her father, and a mass brawl takes place, with Jay, Silent Bob, Milly Jihad, and Sopapilla fighting Shan Yu and the Russian soldiers. And, the movie ends outside of Quick Stop, where Jay and Millie finally have a real father-daughter moment. Oh, and Jay reveals that he and Silent Bob have been putting him in the locks of the Quick Stop shutters as a prank for years.

This movie is very much what one would expect of a Jay and Silent Bob movie. The humor, the performances, the road trip to Hollywood to stop a Bluntman and Chronic movie from happening. This is pretty much everything to expect in a Jay and Silent Bob movie. And, everyone in it is fantastic. Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Shannon Elizabeth, Ben Affleck, Fred Armisen, Chris Jericho, Chris Hemsworth, Rosario Dawson, Craig Robinson, and the rest of the cast are all fantastic. Even the younger cast members, like Harley Quinn Smith, Aparna Brielle, Treshelle Hammond, and Alice Wen were great as well. Overall, a fun return to the world of Jay and Silent Bob, I'm giving Jay and Silent Bob Reboot a rating of 4.5/5.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys on Tuesday.
