Review - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Now, it took me a while to finally check this one out in the theaters, but I'm glad I finally did. This was a really fun, really funny, really cute movie that definitely does the Ninja Turtles justice. The movie was co-written and co-produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and features a stacked cast, which includes Micha Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, John Cena, Giancarlo Esposito, Ice Cube, Paul Rudd, and Ayo Edebiri.

The movie, of course, tells the story of the Ninja Turtles, and how green ooze from TCRI was spilled in the sewers of New York, and the turtles were mutated by the ooze, and trained by a rat named Splinter in the art of ninjutsu. However, the twist is that the ooze was created by Baxter Stockman, who sought to use it to create a mutant army. And, we see said mutants being led by Superfly, and consisting of Mondo Gecko, Genghis Frog, Leatherhead, Wingnut, Ray Fillet, Scumbag, Bebop, and Rocksteady.

Now, all of these mutants are being hunted by TCRI, and their head agent Cynthia Utrom. And, it's kinda neat to see black ops guys working for the company that made the ooze that made the turtles. Speaking of which, the turtles find an ally in the form of high schoolers April O'Neil. And, despite what a few naysayers have said about her on YouTube, I liked this interpretation of April, and I think that Ayo Edebiri did an excellent job voicing this interpretation of the character.

I also loved the inclusion of mutant characters that we haven't seen in a movie yet, such as Leatherhead, Wingnut, Scumbag, Mondo Gecko, Ray Fillet, and Genghis Frog, in addition to fan favorites Bebop and Rocksteady, voices hilariously by Seth Rogen and John Cena. As for Superfly, while I loved Ice Cube's performance as this mutant villain, I do find it odd how they made him a separate character from Baxter Stockman, who was voiced by Giancarlo Esposito. In most media, Stockman turns into the mutant fly, I find it different that the two were kept as separate characters in this movie. As for the turtles themselves, I think that the four kids that provided the voices for them did a great job. And this is the first time that actual teenagers were brought in to voice the turtles, which is very different than most iterations of the Ninja Turtles. I also liked Jackie Chan as Splinter, although his jokes were a bit cringey at times.

The animation was fantastic, sporting a similar art style to the movies Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. I like this comic book style of animation with the cel shading and the the comic book style of motion, which was really neat. This is especially fun given that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise started out as a comic book that is still published to this day. The music choices and pop culture references were definitely fun, and come off as natural and don't feel forced.

Honestly, I think that director Jeff Rowe did a really fantastic job with this movie. He and fellow writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit made a really fun Ninja Turtles movie. So, I'm giving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem a rating of 4.85/5.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
