Review - Secret Invasion (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and today, I want to discuss Secret Invasion, a Marvel Studios streaming series produced for Disney+, and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Emilia Clarke, Don Cheadle, Cobie Smulders, Charlayne Woodard, Martin Freeman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

So, the series centers on Nick Fury, who is caught in a situation where a sect of Skrulls, who lost faith in Fury after he disappeared during the Blip and left the planet after the death of Tony Stark, slowly taking over human society here on Earth. Leading these Skrulls is Garvik, who was once a protege to both Fury and Talos, but has grotto become resentful of both. Also, Talos' daughter, G'iah, is involved and working with Garvik as well.

One of the series' underlying mysteries is who is, in fact, a Skrull in disguise. Not gonna spoil anything, but two prominent MCU characters are revealed to have been replaced by Skrulls, and we see the real guys in the final episode. Another recurring element is the Skrulls attempts to become more powerful. How? By injecting themselves with the DNA of various superheroes, this becoming Super-Skrulls. And, of I'm being honest, introducing Super-Skrulls into the MCU makes a lot of sense, because in the comics, Super-Skrull was a recurring villain throughout the comics. Unfortunately, Super-Skrull was tied to the Fantastic Four, and thus unusable by Marvel Studios until now. And, the idea of Skrulls with the powers of the various Avengers, Asgardians, and Guardians of the Galaxy is an idea that needed to be seen in the MCU.

The performances in the series were fine. Samuel L. Jackson, of course, does an excellent job as Nick Fury, and Ben Mendelsohn is really good as Talos. Both Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir are really good as G'iah and Garvik, respectively, and I enjoyed the returns of Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman, and Cobie Smulders as Rhodey, Everett Ross, and Maria Hill. Other cast members like Dermot Mulroney as the President of the United States, Charlayne Woodard as Varra, and Olivia Coleman as Sonya Falsworth, all do a good job as well.

The makeup effects for the Skrulls is great, the digital effects throughout the series are good. And honestly, it's really just the writing and storytelling that are among the series' weak points. Unfortunately, Secret Invasion takes way too long to tell its story, and is a bit of a chore to get through, even for someone who is a major MCU fan. I think that the Secret Invasion storyline would have been better as an hour-long special more in line with something like Werewolf by Night as opposed to a six-episode series.

Overall, I thought that Secret Invasion was just okay. I'm giving the series a rating of 3.95/5. Okay guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
