Review - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and after years of pestering from friends of mine, I have finally sat down and watched the Sony Animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So, before I go to see the recently released sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, here are my thoughts on Into the Spider-Verse.

Okay, so this movie focuses on Miles Morales, who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and is given superpowers. Wait a minute, isn't that how Peter Parker got his powers and became Spider-Man? Well, yeah, it is. But, this movie shows us that more than one hero to have the same powers from getting bitten by a radioactive spider. In fact, Miles ends up meeting Peter Parker, whois dealing with several of his enemies like Green Goblin, Prowler, Scorpion, Liv Octavius/Doc Ock, Tombstone, and Kingpin, who are working on an interdimensional super collider in Brooklyn. However after it's affected by Peter, the collider opens portals across the multiverse that bring multiple heroes with spider powers into Miles' dimension. This includes Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man, Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Peter Porker/Spider-Ham, Peni Parker/Sp//dr, and Peter Parker/ Spider-Man Noir.

Now, the most notable element of Into the Spider-Verse is the animation style. The art style of this movie is very evocative of a comic book and is intended to be reminiscent of a comic book. In fact, this art style is set to be used for the upcoming animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. And, ultimately, it works. Honestly, it's a fantastic art style that really works for this type of movie.

The voice cast, also, is fantastic. Shameik Moore as Miles, Chris Pine as Peter Parker, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, Kimiko Glenn as Peni Parker, John Mulaney as Spider-Ham, and the likes of Brian Tyree Henry, Mahershala Ali, Kathryn Hahn, Liev Schreiber are all fantastic. And everyone bounces off each other in fun, entertaining, and hilarious ways.

I also love the various Easter Eggs to multiple Spider-Man suits featured in the movie. Seriously, seeing the many suits Spider-Man wore in the comics over the years is fantastic, and definitely fun for fans of Spider-Man. Also, the family dynamic between Miles, his parents Jeff and Rio, and his uncle Aaron are fantastic as well.

Honestly, the crew at Sony Animation did a fantastic job with this movie, and I finally see what everyone has been talking about over the years. So, I'm giving Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a rating of 5/5. Alrighty guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll be back tomorrow when I give my thoughts on the new movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
