Review - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I am back with another movie review of a movie currently in theaters.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the newest film from Sony Pictures Animation, and is the sequel to the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The movie centers, once again, on Miles Morales, who is having struggles with juggling his life as himself and as Spider-Man. And this movie sees him confronted by a poly dimensional villain calling himself Spot. Spot, evidently, got his powers from the super collider Kingpin and his cohorts were utilizing in Into the Spider-Verse, and it was apparently what brought the radioactive spider that bit Miles to Miles' dimension.

Miles is reunited with Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, and he follows her through the multiverse, where he meets several other heroes all of whom are variants of Spider-Man to a certain capacity. And I'm not exaggerating here, frickin' every Spidey from throughout Marvel Comics history is here. Spider-Punk, Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider, Lego Spider-Man, the PS4 video game version of Spider-Man, Spider-UK, Peter B. Parker and his daughter Mayday, Peni Parker, Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Honestly, it's amazing that so many showed up. Heck, the movie even has archive footage of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's versions of Peter Parker. Sweet.

Leading this Spider Society is none other than Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099. This guy is seriously bad news, as he is adamantly trying to keep the multiverse from collapsing, even to the point of trying to keep Miles from returning to his home dimension. And, that's about all I'm gonna say in terms of story, because this movie seriously needs to be seen.

The animation style is pretty much identical to the style from the first movie, but they go more all out with colors and variations of the art style, really showcasing how each dimension in the multiverse is truly different from each other. Also, I absolutely loved the returns of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Kimiko Glenn, and so forth from Into the Spider-Verse. As far as the newcomers go, Oscar Isaac, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Amandla Stenberg, Jason Schwartzman, and Shea Whigham all are fantastic additions.

The action, humor, and the character growth is all fantastic, and I definitely think that the creators took everything that fans loved about Into the Spider-Verse and not only added to it, but genuinely enhanced it a hundred fold. Seriously, this movie was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Spider-Man.

Ultimately, this is definitely one of my favorite animated movies of 2023, tied only with Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night. Sorry, Mario, but Spider-Man and Sword Art Online got ya beat. I'm giving Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse a rating of 5/5. Now, I should mention that the movie ends in a cliffhanger, which means the events of Across the Spider-Verse will ultimately be resolved in the already announced third chapter: Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
