Review - The Flash (2023)

Alrighty guys, Chuck here, and this is my review of the new movie The Flash, the latest film in the DCEU. This film is directed by Andy Muschietti, and stars Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Ron Livingston, Kiersey Clemons, and Michael Keaton, with appearances by Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, and several more surprise appearances from DC film stars past and present. And don't worry, there will be no spoilers here. Now, I may make a Spoiler Review down the road, but that will probably be around the time the movie is out on Blu-ray.

Okay, so the movie takes its inspiration from the DC Comics storyline "Flashpoint," and it has Barry Allen/The Flash uses his speed tor traverse to the past to make it so his mother is never killed. Unfortunately, he's created an alternate timeline where Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman don't exist, and General Zod is attacking Earth. So, with a younger variant of himself, as well as an alternate variant of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Barry must save the world and undonthe damage he caused in the first place.

Now, obviously, there's been much apprehension going into this movie given the personal life issues of actor Ezra Miller. I am aware of everything that they did over the last few years, and I do want them to pay for their poor choices to the fullest extent of the law. However, something to point out is that the movie was filmed well before these incidents took place, and has no bearing on their performance as Barry Allen in the movie. So, keep that in mind going into this movie.

With that being said, I think that Ezra Miller was fantastic in this movie. Quite possibly better than they were in both the theatrical cut and the Snyder Cut of Justice League. Plus, the suit design is absolutely fantastic. The younger Barry, also played by Miller, did get grading at times, but was a lot of fun.

Seeing both Michael Shannon as Zod and Antje Traue as Faora was fantastic, and the definitely were lots of fun to watch in this movie as the villains. I also enjoyed Kiersey Clemons as Iris West and Ron Livingston as Henry Allen. But the two best stand-outs are Michael Keaton as Batman and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. I absolutely loved Sasha as Supergirl, and I was just over the moon with fanboy excitement over seeing Michael Keaton suit up as Batman, not to mention seeing both the Batmobile and Batwing from the 1989 Batman movie.

Unfortunately, the visual effects are definitely a weak point, almost feeling lost in the Uncanny Valley. Not going to spoil anything, but I just wanted to reference that. Also, while the movie feels pretty focused for most of the runtime, it does start to lose traction in the third act.

Regardless, director Andy Muschietti made a DC movie that is a ton of fun. Not a perfect movie, but certainly a fun one. So, I'm giving The Flash a rating of 4.85/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
