Review - Fast X (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just saw the movie Fast X, the latest chapter in Universal's long-running franchise Fast & Furious. This film sees returning cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, John Cena, Jason Statham, and Charlize Theron, with newcomers including Brie Larson, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, and Jason Momoa. Also, we have a new director in Louis Leterrier, who famously directed Universal/Marvel Studios' 2008 film The Incredible Hulk.

So, Dom and the family are being targeted by a new rival, but one who has something of a past history with them. Dante, our main villain for the movie, was the son of Fast Five antagonist Hernan Reyes, and is after revenge for his father's death. Also, the government agency Mr. Nobody belonged to has a new head agent, Aimes, who is also after Dom and the family, but they are getting help from Tess, who is the daughter of Mr. Nobody.

Okay, so the performances in this movie are to be expected from a Fast & Furious movie, as Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang all deliver the performances you expect from them at this point. I also enjoyed seeing Rita Moreno as Abuelita Toretto, as well as Jordana Brewster as Mia. John Cena gets a lot more screen time as Jakob, and is definitely a lot of fun when he's not a villain the way he was in F9. Charlize Theron as Cypher is also back, and it seems like her arc is taking an interesting turn that I won't spoil here. Also, it was great getting Jason Statham and Helen Mirren back as Deckard and Queenie Shaw, and they were both amazing.

As for newcomers, Alan Ritchson as Aimes was a real enigma, and was definitely badass in many moments throughout the movie. Both Brie Larson as Tess and Daniela Melchior as Isabel were excellent additions to the movie, and I loved a reveal about how Isabel is connected to the family in this movie. Again, no spoilers. As for Jason Momoa as Dante, this guy was really something. An overly flamboyant enigma who kept you guessing, but also kept you rolling your eyes by his ridiculous mannerisms. But, we are talking about the same actor who played Aquaman as a dude-bro, so this isn't too surprising. Either way, he was definitely a genuine threat to Dom and the family in this movie.

The action and car stunts are possibly some of the best since Furious 7, and they are very reminiscent of the stunts from Fast Five. Director Louis Leterrier definitely made a fun action movie that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story, however, felt slightly disjointed in places, but did manage to come together in the end for a surprising punch. Again, no spoilers here, but just be prepared to pick up your jaw from the theater floor after the film's pre-credits and mid-credits scenes. All in all, I had a fun time with Fast X, and I'm giving it a rating of 4.65/5.

Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off, and Marvel May will return this Monday with my review of Blade.
