Marvel May - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and we're back with more Marvel May. Last night, I went to see Marvel Studios' newest film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third film of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and also the final Marvel Studios project to be written and directed by James Gunn, whose next superhero film will be 2025's Superman: Legacy. But, we're here to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy, so, let's get into it.

So, the Guardians of the Galaxy are still in the midst of reassembling Knowhere, which was the base of operations as of the GotG Holiday Special, when they find themselves under attack by Adam Warlock, a superpowered being created by Sovereign leader Ayesha to destroy the Guardians. After Adam's attack, the Guardians patch themselves up...but one problem. Apparently, Rocket has a Killswitch in his heart preventing anyone from healing him without the proper pass key. And who has it? None other than Rocket's creator: the High Evolutionary. So, the Guardians, with help from Gamora, who now leads the Ravagers, must reach the High Evolutionary and save Rocket's life.

Okay, so the real emotional core of this movie comes from learning of Rocket's past, which is shown in flashbacks throughout the movie. It's amazing seeing how he was turned from a common raccoon into an intelligent being that we know him to be, and I think that James Gunn definitely delivered on making up truly feel for Rocket through the absolute Hell the High Evolutionary put him through. And speaking of whom, Chukwudi Iwuji was definitely a genuine threat as the High Evolutionary. This is a guy who has a god-complex so intense that, chances are, even Thanos and Ego would be pissing themselves just hearing this guy talk. He's an absolute monster and he is definitely one of the more unique villains of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, on the other hand, is more of a nuisance than a threat. Don't get me wrong, the the kid does a great job with his performance, but the character just kinda pops in just to beat up the Guardians every so often. That's really his whole character up until the third act, but I don't wanna spoil anything, so just check the movie out, and you'll see what I mean.

As for the Guardians themselves, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel all do really well. I also enjoyed Maria Bakalova as Cosmo, and Zoe Saldana as Gamora. Others, like Daniela Melchior, Nathan Fillion, Sylvester Stallone, and so on also do really well in various parts throughout the movie.

Ultimately, though, James Gunn really gives a sense of finality to his run with the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Marvel may choose to bring a new iteration of the team to the big screen in the future, but this current iteration of the team is officially done. And for their final outing, I enjoyed it. Honestly, if I had to rank all of the Guardians of the Galaxy titles, I'd put it GotG Vol. 2 last, followed by the Holiday Special, then Vol. 3, and then the original GotG movie as the best. I'm giving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 a rating of 4.55/5. Definitely one of the better MCU movies in recent years.

Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off. Have a great weekend, and I'll be back on Monday to continue Marvel May with X-Men: First Class.
