Marvel May - Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and we've reached the end of yet another Marvel May. And, to finish out Marvel May, not only am I taking a look at one of the worst Marvel films of all time, but quite possibly the worst superhero film of 2012, which I will remind you, my faithful readers, gave us such bangers as The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man. So, let's finish out Marvel May with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

One of only two films released under the "Marvel Knights" banner, the other being 2008's Punisher: War Zone, this movie sees Johnny Blaze in Europe, trying to figure out how to deal with the curse that turned him into the Ghost Rider. Johnny is approached by Moreau, a holy warrior protecting a woman named Nadya Ketch, along with her son Danny, who is a target of Roarke, who is actually Mephistopheles with a different face. Roarke is also using Nadya's ex, Ray Corrigan, to go after them.

In a major reveal, Johnny learns that the spirit of the Ghost Rider was, once upon a time, an angel named Zarathos, who was a Spirit of Justice, but was tortured and driven insane in hell. Roarke, meanwhile, empowers Corrigan, making him a monstrosity called Blackout, who can cause anything he touches to rot. Also, the reason Roarke wants Danny is, as his son, Danny is the perfect vessel for Roarke to exist in our world, and -- you know what? I'm done. The story of this movie is fucking stupid. I mean, really fucking stupid. Seriously, I find it hard to believe that David S. Goyer, who crafted the story of The Dark Knight trilogy with Christopher Nolan, came up with something this unimaginably dumb.

On top of that, the talent in this movie feels absolutely wasted. The only actors that seem to be giving a shit are Nicolas Cage, who reprises his role of Johnny Blaze from the first Ghost Rider, Johnny Whitworth, who plays Blackout, and Idris Elba, who plays Moreau. Ciaran Hinds feels like he's slumming it as Roarke, both Anthony Stewart Head and Christopher Lambert feel like they belong in a completely different movie as two monks of the religious order Moreau belongs to, and both Violante Placido and Fergus Riordan come off as stilted and boring as Nadya and Danny.

The cinematography is easily the most fucked up thing about this movie, with a lot of slow down/speed up shots that just come off as off-putting. Seriously, this is the weirdest I've seen a comic book film be edited since Ang Lee took the comic book aspect to a weird-ass dimension with the 2003 film Hulk. Directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who famously directed the Crank franchise with Jason Statham, made a really bizarre movie where we literally see the Ghost Rider piss fire. Seriously, they showed Ghost Rider pissing fire. Honestly, up until 2015's Fant4stic, this was the worst Marvel movie I've ever seen. I'm giving Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance a rating of 0.65/5. Seriously, don't waste your time watching this shit. It's not worth it.

Anyway guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll be back in the near future. But, after a very lengthy Marvel May, I need a break. See you guys in June.
