12 Reviews of Christmas - Pentatonix: Around the World For the Holidays (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and we're back with more 12 Reviews of Christmas. Today, we'll be taking a look at Pentatonix: Around the World For the Holidays, which is currently streaming on Disney+.

So, the special focuses on the a capella group Pentatonix, who are getting ready to record another Christmas album. But, they run into a dilemma: they've performed every Christmas song out there already. So, looking for some inspiration, they head into what they believe is the Break Room, but is actually an enchanted Mail Room. The door disappears, and the fill-in manager tries getting them out, to no avail. Meanwhile, Pentatonix reads several fan letters from every part of the world, including a fan letters from Arendelle (hilariously encased in a block of ice).

Reading a few of the fan letters, they learn of the various ways that cultures across the globe celebrate the Christmas holidays with their many traditions. The places they read the letters from, specifically, are from Japan, Grenada, Western Africa, Mexico, and Iceland. Each letter is from a fan who recounts their connection to music, their holiday traditions, and their love of Pentatonix. And each segment ends with the fan singing a different Christmas song, transitioning to Pentatonix singing that same Christmas song, and reflecting on the letter they just read.

I gotta say, that it's really special getting to watch this special and learning how other cultures across the globe celebrate the Christmas holiday. From music, to cuisine, to other traditions, getting a look into these cultures' Christmas celebrations and how Christmas means different things to people across the world is something truly spectacular. And what a more perfect song to end such a special as this than the one Disney song that shows how much the world is truly united: "It's a Small World."

One other neat part is a special appearance by Disney's own a capella music group, DCapella, who have a latter that Pentatonix reads as well. And, of course, DCapella gets to sing a little bit as well, because why not. Speaking of which, I absolutely loved the singing throughout the special, not just from Pentatonix and DCapella, but from each of the fans that had their letters read during the special and got to participate in the special. It definitely gives a genuine feeling of being united for the Christmas holiday.

I also enjoyed the back and forth between the members of Pentatonix, with each one of them recounting the different memories around the holidays that they have. Mitch, Scott, Kevin, Kirstin, and Matt did a great job with this special, and I think that I can call myself a fan of Pentatonix now, because these guys are great.

Overall, this was a fantastic special that needs to be watched with the family. I cannot stress this enough, definitely give this special a watch on Disney+. I'm giving Pentatonix: Around the World For the Holidays a rating of 5/5.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll be back tomorrow with my review of DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians as we continue 12 Reviews of Christmas.
