Review - One Piece Film: Red (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and this is my quick review of One Piece Film: Red, the newest film in the seemingly neverending anime franchise One Piece, which I am a fan of, but admittedly I haven't watched it in its entirety. That would take waaayy too long to try and do.

So, this movie is set on an island nation of Elegia, where a childhood friend of Luffy's named Uta is holding a massive concert for all of her fans. Unfortunately, Uta's musical power is seen as a danger to everyone, which leads both the Navy and the Five Elders to try and stop her. Meanwhile, we learn that Uta was the adoptive daughter of "Red-Haired" Shanks, who is the pirate who set Luffy on the path to becoming the next King of the Pirates. Uta was apparently left behind years before by Shanks, leaving her a serious resentment of all pirates. After a warning from Gordon, former leader of Elegia who looked after Uta after Shanks left her behind, Luffy and the pirates on Elegia must work to stop Uta from unleashing the power of the Tots Musica, which is a demonic entity once unleashed upon Elegia.

Okay, so I definitely enjoyed getting to see Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates in this movie, and I definitely laughed my ass off with Brook, who is one of my favorite characters in One Piece. The one major new character, Uta, was a lot of fun, and it's fascinating to have a major character in a One Piece movie be this globally adored Pop music idol. And, of course, seeing Shanks on the big screen was just awesome.

The animation was fantastic, especially during Uta's musical performances throughout the movie. The bright, vibrant lights and effects were really neat, and just pure eye candy, and I think that the animation team behind this movie really deserves to be recognized for their hard work. Now, I saw this movie both in Japanese and in English. And while I could follow the movie in Japanese with English subtitles, it was much easier to keep up while watching the English dubbed version of the movie. If you do get to see this movie, definitely see it in whichever version you prefer. Just be aware, though, that there are some major dialogue differences between the Japanese and English versions. 4/5 rating for this movie, because as great as it was, it's definitely a film primarily for fans of anime, and specifically One Piece.

This is Chuck signing off, and I'll be back on Tuesday for my review of the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
