Review - Black Adam (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got done with watching the newest DC Extended Universe film Black Adam , directed by Jaume Collett-Serra and Starring Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Viola Davis, and Pierce Brosnan.

Okay, so the movie introduces us to Teth-Adam, who in ancient times was beloved to have been the Champion of the Kingdom of Kahndaq, granted the powers of Shazam by the Wizards. Thousands of years later, and Teth-Adam has been brought back in present day Kahndaq, which is under the ruthless occupation of the criminal syndicate Intergang, to be Champion once again. However, his presence alerts both Amanda Waller and Carter Hall/Hawkman, who assembled the Justice Society to subdue Teth-Adam before things get out of control.

Okay, so easily the one performance that got everyone excited for this movie is Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam, and he definitely owns the role. Now, one thing to remember is that the character was originally slated to appear in the 2019 film Shazam, but it was decided that the character deserved his own film before going toe-to-toe with Billy Batson/Shazam in a future film. And honestly, I definitely think that was an excellent call, as Dwayne Johnson is definitely a highlight of this movie, and is easily the one person that will draw the fans to enjoy it.

Personally, however, my favorite performance came from Pierce Brosnan, who portrays Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate. Next to Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan was definitely a highlight of this movie for me, and I definitely am glad he got to bring Doctor Fate to life in this movie. I also enjoyed the rest of the Justice Society, with both Noah Centineo and Quintessa Swindell as Atom Smasher and Cyclone, but the bigger highlight for me was Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. Honestly, I definitely want to see him come back in a Justice Society movie, and possibly see Aldis Hodge's Hawkman team up with Kendra Sanders/Hawkgirl.

Now, while I liked the idea of Intergang being the main villains of the movie, unfortunately the leader of Intergang, played by Marwan Kenzari, was a little too generic for my taste. However, the scenes he has in the film's climax, without getting into spoilers, was pretty kick-ass. I did, however, enjoy Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, who was definitely a fantastic anchor point for the film's story.

Overall, this is definitely one that was made for DC fans in mind. And as far as where I'd rank this movie within the DCEU, I think that Black Adam is among the better ones, right up there with Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and the Snyder Cut of Justice League as being a fun time for DC fans. And for those out there who have read the critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, don't let that sway your decision. Definitely give this one a watch. I'm giving Black Adam a rating of 5/5. Yeah, it was that fun to watch.

Anyway, this is Chuck signing off, and HallowScream returns tomorrow with my review of Rob Zombie's The Munsters.
