HallowScream - Five Nights at Freddy's (2014)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just wanted to get this quick game review out for HallowScream. Here's my quick take on the 2014 gaming sensation Five Nights at Freddy's, created by Scott Cawthon. I recently acquired a copy of the Five Nights at Freddy's Core Collection for Nintendo Switch, and I just got into playing the original game. So, here's my quick take on Five Nights at Freddy's

The game is set at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, where you are hired as the night watchman, and are assigned to stay in the guard room, watching the monitors of the restaurant from 12 am to 6 am. Ultimately, you have a limited power supply, and once the power runs out, game over. However, if you can survive until 6 am, it's on to the next night.

Throughout the night, you'll be seeing the animatronic characters wandering around the restaurant, such as Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate Fox. Ironically, Freddy Fazbear himself rarely comes off the stage, but he will step off stage occasionally. Luckily, to keep the animatronics from getting to you, you have doors and door lights that can help, especially because the doors are seen as blindspots for the cameras. Typically, Bonnie and Foxy will come through the left side, while Chica will pop through the right side.

However, while the gameplay is simple and straightforward, what makes this game so damn scary is the fear of being jump scared by one of the four animatronics. If you aren't careful, one of Bonnie, Chica, or Foxy can get inside, and jump scare you after setting down the monitor. Hell, even Freddy might jump scare you, not to mention a mysterious version of Freddy called Golden Freddy. And again, if you get jump scared, game over. And as time goes on, and power drains, fear continues to build, and you continue to check the cameras and the doors, which drains the power more, adding to the fear, until it all ends in a jump scare.

Honestly, even though I'm late to the party with this game, I can definitely see what makes Five Nights at Freddy's so terrifying. Evidently, Scott Cawthon is teaming up with Blumhouse Productions to make a feature film adaptation of the game, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop is building the animatronic characters from the game as we speak. Now, the Core Collection I have for the Nintendo Switch also has the games Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Five Nights at Freddy's 4, and Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location. But, I don't think I'll be making any reviews of those four games necessarily, because really, they're just the same concept but with additional gimmicks added to it. As for the original game, I'm giving Five Nights at Freddy's a rating of 4.85/5. Seriously, this game is effing scary as Hell.

Anyway, this is Chuck signing off, and we'll be back with more HallowScream tomorrow with my review of the movie Hocus Pocus 2.
