Review - Clerks III (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, here it is, my review of Clerks III, the third film in the Clerks series, and the latest entry in writer/director Kevin Smith's View Askew franchise. This movie sees the returns of Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Walt Flanagan, Marilyn Ghiliotti, Rosario Dawson, Trevor Fehrman, and Kevin Smith, with appearances by Amy Sedaris, Justin Long, and a slew of others.

Okay, so it's been a while since the ending of Clerks II, and Dante Hicks and Randal Graves are the co-owners of the Quick Stop. One day, while getting into a debate with their employee, Elias, Randal suffers from a near-fatal heart attack, and Dante is quick to call for an ambulance. After life-saving surgery, Randal has a revelation about his life, and the direction it has gone in. After a chat with Dante, Randal decides to make a movie about his life. So, with Randal writing and directing, and Dante producing, the two set out to make a movie, featuring the major events in their lives, and even have people like Jay and Silent Bob, Dante's ex Veronica, and several others.

Okay, so a major theme in this movie is self-reflection. As Dante and Randal make the movie about their lives, they're literally reliving all of the details of their lives. And, of course, we get to see them reunite with individuals that were a part of their lives. I definitely enjoyed the scene between Dante and Veronica, who hadn't seen each other since the events of the original film. Also, I should note that the majority of the scenes are either between Dante and Randal or between Dante, Randal, and Elias. And I honestly think that this movie has the most amount of screen time for Jay and Silent Bob in any of the three Clerks movies.

Another theme of this movie is melancholy. Randal has a heart attack and nearly died, and he has a revelation about how short life really is. Heck, even Dante is at his most melancholic in this movie, and I'm saying that without going into spoilers. Both Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson really sell the melancholy that both Dante and Randal are feeling quite brilliantly. Now, while I still feel that the original Clerks is still the best film of the three, Clerks III is definitely a welcome final chapter for these fan-favorite characters.

Clerks III is definitely one to check out, especially for long-time fans of the View Askew franchise, and the Clerks movies specifically. The movie will be in theaters for a limited time courtesy of Fathom Events, so check your local theaters for showtimes. I'm giving the movie Clerks III a rating of 4.85/5.

Alright guys, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
