Review - Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got home from seeing Thor: Love and Thunder , the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie is directed, once again, by Taika Waititi, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson,  Natalie Portman, with special appearances by Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, and Russell Crowe.

So, in his newest adventure, Thor teams up with Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster, who is now the Mighty Thor, to deal with the threat of Gorr the God Butcher, a madman wielding a very dangerous weapon called the Necrosword, before he uses it to kill every god in the universe.

So, Chris Hemsworth is brilliant once again as Thor, and his scenes with Natalie Portman as Jane/Mighty Thor are easily the best in the entire Thor franchise. Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie is terrific, once again, and I definitely enjoyed the return of Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif. Christian Bale was definitely eerie as Gorr the God Butcher, and his story was incredibly tragic.

Now, whereas the humor in Thor: Ragnarok was fresh and entertaining, the humor in this movie feels little too much like a screwball comedy. I will admit, seeing Thor's pet goats was cool, and tapping into the popular "Screaming Goat" Internet meme with them was really funny. But what wasn't funny was Russell Crowe as Zeus. I dunno what kind of performance he was giving here, but it was just a little too weird for my taste. And, while seeing the Asgardian actors doing another play was cool, and all three of Luke Hemsworth, Sam Neill, and Matt Damon were terrific, why the hell did they have Melissa McCarthy as the actress playing Hela? I'm sorry, but I'm honestly not a fan of Melissa McCarthy.

The visual effects were terrific, especially those involving Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, and Zeus' Thunderbolt. But, I do think that some of the makeup work was a little too distracting in some cases. However, it's the soundtrack that really saved this movie for me. Just like how Taika Waititi brilliantly used "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin in Thor: Ragnarok, this movie utilizes three Guns n' Roses songs: "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City," and "Sweet Child of Mine," the latter of which was featured in the trailers.

One last thing I appreciated was seeing Thor start off the movie with the Guardians of the Galaxy, as it helps keep that continuity with where we last left Thor at the end of Avengers: Endgame. But, in truth, this was another passable entry into Marvel's Phase Four. As much fun as it is, we'll see what general audiences think of this one, or if we've finally started to feel burnout from the MCU. As for me, I'm giving Thor: Love and Thunder a rating of 4.25/5. Definitely check this out this weekend. And be sure to stay through the credits for some terrific post-credits scenes. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll be back on Tuesday with my review of Bumblebee.
