Review - Jurassic World: Dominion (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just got back from seeing Jurassic World: Dominion, the third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and sixth overall in the Jurassic Park franchise. Directed by the returning Colin Trevorrow, this film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Campbell Scott, and a host of others.

So, a few years have passed since the events of Fallen Kingdom, and dinosaurs have reintegrated into our ecosystem. Unfortunately, InGen's corporate rivals, BioSyn Genetics, have been experimenting with new species of dinosaurs, as well as a form of locusts from the Cretaceous Period. Meanwhile, BioSyn is also after the genetic information hidden in the DNA of Maisie Lockwood, who has been under the care of Owen Grady and Claire Dearing since the events of Fallen Kingdom. Now, along with Alan Grant, Ellie Satler, and Ian Malcolm, it's up to Owen and Claire to save Maisie, along with a baby Velociraptor named Beta, before BioSyn CEO Lewis Dodgson can use them for his own nefarious plans.

Okay, so this movie has waaaayyy too much going on at once. Honestly, any one of the story threads could have worked better independently as a possible anthology project for, say, Netflix. However, putting them together in one movie just feels extremely disjointed and leads the movie to lack any real sense of focus.

That's not to say that everything in this movie is an abject failure. For instance, the performances by the likes of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Isabella Sermon, Omar Sy, Justice Smith, and Daniella Pineda are all great, as are the performances of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, who is thankfully not merely in this movie as a glorified cameo. I also appreciated the interactions between Owen and Claire with Alan, Ellie, and Ian. Newcomers like Campbell Scott, DeWanda Wise, and Mamoudou Athie all do a good job as well.

I also like seeing some of the new species of dinosaurs, including the likes of Pyroraptor, Quetzalcoatlus, Therizinosaurus, and Giganotosaurus. These, along with returning favorites like Mosasaurus and Tyrannosaurus is absolutely fantastic.

Honestly, this movie is a prime example of the whole not being nearly as good as the sum of its parts. Luckily, some of those parts are really enjoyable. Is it the worst of the series? Not in my opinion. But, it's definitely one of the weaker entries of the series. I'm giving Jurassic World: Dominion a rating of 3.45/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
