Review - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, it's finally here. I just went to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theaters, and here are my thoughts. This is the sequel to the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog, and sees the returns of actors James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Lee Majdoub, and Jim Carrey, with Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, and sees newcomers like Shemar Moore and the voices of Colleen O'Shaughnessy as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna.

So, it's been a while since Sonic moved in with Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and Sonic has been working to be a hero. However, due to his youthful age and spirit, Sonic is a little too wreckless, and causes more harm than good. Luckily, he is given a big responsibility, as Tom and Maddie are heading to Hawaii for the wedding of Maddie's sister Rachel and her fiance Randall.

Unfortunately, however, Sonic's archenemy Dr. Robotnik has returned to Earth with help from Knuckles the Echidna, and the two are on a quest to locate the all-powerful Master Emerald. Now, with his new ally Tails, can Sonic get to the Emerald first and save the world? You're just going to have to see the movie yourself to find out.

Okay, so director Jeff Fowler definitely brought back a lot of the signature humor from the first movie and even added to it, as the jokes and one-liners in this movie are just as hilarious as the ones in the first movie. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are terrific once again as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and I even enjoyed Natasha Rothwell as Rachel a bit more in this movie than in the first movie. Ben Schwartz is terrific once more as the voice of Sonic, and he's definitely becoming one of my favorite versions of Sonic.

As a game fan, I absolutely loved the fact that they got Colleen O'Shaughnessy to reprise her role as Tails from the games. She absolutely nails this character, and I am definitely happy that she got to return for this movie. Similarly, Idris Elba was definitely great as Knuckles. He brings a real warrior's bravado to the role, and I had a blast with this character and his progression throughout the story. Shemar Moore does a great job in this movie, but he's not in it very much, and his role is a very minor one at best.

But easily, Jim Carrey is the stand out of the movie as Dr. Robotnik. He definitely gets a lot of screen time, and every second of it is gut bustingly hilarious. I also like how his appeal is much closer to the games. No fat suit yet, but the bald head and the goofy-ass moustache are definitely game accurate, and he pulls off the look just perfectly.

I also love how the movie dug deep into Sonic lore with the Master Emerald and its connection to Knuckles' people, the Echidnas. It's stuff like that that shows me that Jeff Fowler and his team are definitely fans of the Sonic franchise, and therefore are approaching this movie from a place of love and reverence to the Sega video game franchise.

Now, there are two elements of the movie that fans will be super excited about, especially during the mid-credits scene. However, I'm not going to spoil them here, and I'm just going to say that everyone need to see this movie. Period. End of discussion.

All in all, as a fan of Sonic, I had a great time with this movie, and if you're a Sonic fan as well, I think you're going to love it as well. Definitely a fun one to take the kids to. I'm giving Sonic the Hedgehog 2 a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
