Review - Morbius (2022)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got home from seeing Morbius, the Sony Pictures film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. This movie stars Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Now, I would like to clarify that this movie is based on the world of Marvel Comics, but it is NOT a Marvel Studios production, and therefore Kevin Feige has nothing to do with this movie. The producer of this film is Avi Arad, who has been involved with making Marvel movies before Marvel Studios was a thing, and has continued to do so independently of Marvel Studios. So, how does this movie measure up? Let's discuss.

Okay, so this movie follows Dr. Michael Morbius, who has been afflicted by a blood disease since birth, and unless he finds a cure, he will die. Morbius believes that by mixing the DNA of humans with an anti-coagulating gland found in vampire bats, he can cure his disease. While it does work, it also has the unforseen side effects of making Morbius into a vampiric being with an insatiable appetite for blood. On top of that, Morbius' childhood friend Milo, who suffers from the same disease, takes the serum and becomes a vampire himself. So, can Morbius find a cure for his vampirism and save himself and his friend? You're going to have to see the movie yourself to find out.

Now, I've been hearing a lot of mixed things about this movie. Critics hate it, audiences like it, and there's no real consensus on whether the movie is good or bad? Personally, I think it's just okay. How are the actors? They're okay. How's the plot? A little too breakneck in terms of pacing, but it's okay. How are the visual effects? Again, they're okay.

Honestly, Jared Leto and Matt Smith are both really good here. Matt, especially, was a highlight of this movie, as he can really be over-the-top, and is a perfect off-set to the more neutral Jared Leto as Morbius. Jared Harris and Adria Arjona we're both terrific as the main supporting players, and I thoroughly enjoyed Tyrese Gibson as an FBI Agent investigating Morbius throughout the movie.

In all honesty, Director Daniel Espinosa and writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless did a decent job in taking a Marvel Comics character with very limited exposure and bringing him to the silver screen. As I said, I enjoyed the movie and thought it was okay. And there in lies the problem. You see, we live in a world where Marvel Studios has one of the highest-grossing movies of all time with Avengers: Endgame, and have received a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards for their 2018 film Black Panther. On top of that, Marvel Studios has been succeeding in streaming content with shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye. So, in a day and age like this, where Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are the most talked about movies of 2021, just okay doesn't cut it with Marvel Comics based movies.

Anyway, I had an enjoyable time with this movie, but can't really call it a must-see. See it if you're interested in it. Otherwise, just wait until Multiverse of Madness next month. I'm giving Morbius a rating of 3.95/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
