My Thoughts on the 2022 Academy Awards

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, the Academy Awards ceremony was held this evening, and there is quite a lot to discuss. Tons of winners, wonderful anniversary celebrations for beloved films, and some surprises happened throughout the night. So, let's discuss the Academy Awards.

Okay, so it's really no surprise that Dune basically dominated the technical awards, including Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography. Honestly, I'm not surprised, because Denis Villeneuve and his team quite literally made a piece of cinematic art. I said back in October during my review of Dune how much I loved it on a visual level.

Best Costume Design went to the film Cruella. Again, not a surprise, as the costumes, especially those worn by Emma Stone, were absolutely incredible. Best Animated Feature went to Encanto, and I honestly think that it was well deserved. The two Best Documentary awards went to Summer of Soul by Questlove and The Queen of Basketball by Ben Proudfoot. The Japanese film Drive My Car took home the award for Best International Feature Film.

As far as acting goes, the three I'm going to focus on for now are Jessica Chastain winning Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Ariana DeBose winning Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story, and Will Smith winning Best Actor for King Richard. And, honestly, Will's acceptance speech was incredibly moving and kudos to him for that. HOWEVER, I know that it won't be his Oscar win or his acceptance speech everyone will be talking about tomorrow. Nope, that distinction goes to the moment where, after a joke was made towards Will's wife Jada, Will stood up, walked onto the stage, and slapped the heck out of Chris Rock. Seriously, go look the clip up on YouTube, because it's such a WTF moment that it just needs to be seen.

Anyway, Billie Eilish and Finneas won Best Original Song for the theme for No Time to Die. Also, I would like to acknowledge that the Academy Awards ceremony had a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise, as well as the 50th anniversary of The Godfather, the 30th anniversary of White Men Can't Jump, and the 28th anniversary of Pulp Fiction

The In Memoriam segment honored the passings of icons like Richard Donner, Sidney Poitier, Betty White, and Ivan Reitman, among others. Sadly, neither Ed Asner not Bob Saget we're mentioned during the show, but I digress. Also, I definitely enjoyed the performance of songs like "Dos Oruguitas" and "We Don't Talk about Bruno" from Encanto, as well as the theme from No Time to Die by Billie Eilish and Finneas.

Lastly, I'd like to mention the big winner of the night, CODA, which took home the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Picture. Big congratulations to the folks who worked hard on this film for their accomplishments this evening.

All in all, the Academy Awards were pretty much what one could expect, aside from that slap. Overall an entertaining show. Hosts Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes did a great job tonight, and I thoroughly enjoyed them and their humorous antics throughout the evening. I busted a gut laughing at Amy Schumer dressed as Spider-Man dangling above the stage spraying cans of silly string all over the place. Great job, ladies.

Anyway, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
