Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2021

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas weekend. I know I did. Well, we've reached the end of 2021, and it's really great that we got to go back to the movie theaters once again, in spite of the ongoing issues related to COVID-19. Anyway, I would like to run down the list of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2021

First, let's get a few honorable mentions out of the way: Eternals, a Marvel movie with a lot of promise and potential, but not quite a game changer. Mortal Kombat, a fun, more faithful adaptation of the iconic fighting game franchise. F9, as fun as it was, it's the first sign of the fan-favorite franchise running out of steam. Jungle Cruise, Disney's popular ride is turned into a movie that's half Pirates of the Caribbean and half The Mummy. Halloween Kills, not as good as the 2018 film, but still a fun entry in the legendary horror series. No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond is definitely an enjoyable one. Venom: Let There be Carnage, Tom Hardy stands out once again as Venom, and Woody Harrelson is surprisingly menacing as Carnage.

Okay, with those honorable mentions out of the way, on to the Top 10.

      10. Godzilla vs Kong: the fourth film in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse series pits Godzilla and Kong not only against each other, but also against the cybernetic menace known as Mechagodzilla in a grudge match of the Titans that was a ton of fun on the big screen.

     9. Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson is once again terrific as Natasha Romanoff, as is Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Great casting and a spy thriller angle definitely made for a fun Marvel movie.

     8. The Suicide Squad: director James Gunn directs a fun ensemble piece that improves greatly upon its 2016 predecessor. Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, Daniela Melchior, and John Cena are all equally enjoyable and hilarious in this movie.

      7. Cruella: Emma Stone shines in this 70's period piece that explores the origins of one of Disney's most iconic villains. Emma Thompson and Mark Strong fill out major supporting roles and definitely add to strengthen this one.

       6. Ghostbusters Afterlife: Jason Reitman delivers a film that is truly worthy of being a Ghostbusters movie, with a lot of nostalgia, as well as a true passing of the torch moment that will bring tears to your eyes.

       5. Encanto: Disney's latest animated feature is very colorful, very energetic, and has story that is definitely timeless, with a very impressive voice cast of mostly Latinx actors.

      4. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Definitely a surprise for me, this Marvel Studios produced martial arts film is awe inspiring and has a lead actor, Simu Liu, who I think can definitely hold his own alongside the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

      3. Dune: Denis Villeneuve delivers a cinematic feast of great visual storytelling, an excellent cast, and a scale that truly does justice to the Frank Herbert's classic novel.

      2. The Matrix Resurrections: what was easily my most anticipated movie of the year is definitely one of my favorites of the year. Lana Wachowski delivers on a film that not only continues the legacy of The Matrix franchise, but evolves the world of The Matrix in new and exciting ways.

       1. Spider-Man: No Way Home: what I'm sure will be atop everyone's list of their favorite movies of the year, It's definitely an excellent film. It delivered on all of the fan speculation and all of the promise of delivering a terrific follow-up to 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. Plus, it just crossed the billion dollar mark over the holiday weekend, so it's definitely doing something right.

And there you have it. My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2021. Now, as a special treat, this Friday, I will be posting a ranking of all nine Marvel Cinematic Universe releases of the year 2021, followed by my Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2022 next Sunday. Until then, this is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
