Review - Encanto (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just went to see the new Disney film Encanto, and here's my quick take on the film.

So the movie, which is set in Colombia, focuses on the Madrigal family, who escaped certain doom through the power of an enchanted candle that was carried by the family matriarch, Abuela Alma. The enchanted candle allows for the creation of a new house, that is alive by the way, and all of Alma's children and grandchildren are granted special gifts, like incredible strength, communication with animals, precognition, healing, and so forth. The main protagonist of the film is Mirabel, who is the only one of the Madrigal family not to receive a gift. But, when the enchantment is fading, it's up to Mirabel to save her family and their home, before the magic of the Encanto is gone forever.

So, the movie has a terrific voice cast of mostly Hispanic actors, including the likes of Stephanie Beatriz, Maria Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Wilmer Valderrama, Diane Guerrero, and Angie Cepeda. Each of them are terrific, and I enjoyed the dynamic amongst the various family members quite a bit.

The songs, which were written by the one and only Lin Manuel Miranda, were definitely fantastic. While there weren't as many single hits like from his earlier work with Moana, the songs in this movie serve more to tell the story, and they all work well as a collective whole.

I also admired the film's color palette. Setting the film in Colombia definitely allows for truly vibrant and beautiful ranges of color and designs throughout the movie, and it's just a visual feast. But the biggest takeaway is the emotional investment throughout the movie. Trust me, there are quite a few tearjerker moments in the film.

Overall, Encanto was a terrific film that the family can enjoy together. For Disney Animation Studios' 60th overall feature film, it's definitely one to see. I give it a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
