HallowScream - South Park: Spookyfish (1998)

Hey guys, Chuck here. It's been a little bit, but I'm back with another HallowScream review. This time, we'll be looking at a fun, spooky episode of South Park with Spookyfish

In the episode, which is presented in SpookyVision (where images of Barbara Streisand's head are in all four corners of the screen), Stan's Aunt Flo is visiting the Marsh household, and she gives his sister Shelly a new stereo, white Stan gets a goldfish that he is bothered by how creepy it is. Meanwhile, an alternate universe version of Eric Cartman has arrived, and is confusing the likes of Stan, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick with a newfound charitable behavior, and exhibiting kindness by skipping school to take care of his sick mother.

Ultimately, Stan's fears about his new goldfish are proven to be true when it starts killing people. Stan's mother, Sharon, believes it to be Stan's doing, and covers it up by burying the bodies of a few random victims, as well as Kenny,  because of course Kenny dies in the episode. Eventually, it's revealed that the fish was bought at a pet store called "Indian Burial Ground Pet Store," so, Stan, Kyle, and both Cartmans, when it's revealed that there's two of them, head to this place to return the fish and get answers.

At the pet store, the owner reveals that all of the pets have turned into killers, and he reveals that he disturbed the graves of dead Native Americans by digging up the graves, turning over the corpses, and urinating on the corpses before burying them again. This act of disrespect caused a dimension to open to an evil alternate universe, causing the animals to go crazy, and is the reason that the alternate universe Cartman, or Evil Cartman, showed up. Ultimately, Stan and Kyle prefer Evil Cartman over OG Cartman, because Evil Cartman is a nice guy.

Meanwhile, Officer Barbrady shows up to investigate some disappearances, and Sharon locks him in the basement, wanting only to protect Stan from being taken away. Her husband, Randy, finds Barbrady in the basement, and asks Sharon about what's going on, but she's pretty vague about it. Meanwhile, Evil Universe versions of Stan and Kyle show up to reclaim their universe's version of Cartman, but the two get mixed up, and when Kyle blasts what he thinks is OG Cartman, it's later revealed to have been Evil Cartman that got blasted, and they're stuck with OG Cartman. The evil pets are taken care of, and the episode ends.

Spookyfish is one of my favorite episodes of the early years of South Park. As the Halloween episode of Season Two, Matt Stone and Trey Parker definitely had fun with this one. I also like the nods to stuff like The Shining with a pet store built atop an Indian Burial Ground, Star Trek with goatee-sporting evil counterparts of Stan, Kyle, and Kenny, and Pet Sematary with various pets that are crazed and are killing people. However, one distracting part was the side bars reading "Spooky Vision" and having the head of Barbara Streisand in the corners of the screen. It's more of a nitpick than a criticism though, but it was worth mentioning that it was a bit distracting.

Overall, Spookyfish is a fun one to watch for Halloween, and it definitely gets a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys tomorrow when I review the new movie Halloween Kills.
