HallowScream - Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just finished watching the new Disney+ special Muppets Haunted Mansion, so let's discuss.

So, the story focuses on Gonzo and Pepe, who are invited to a "survive the night" gig at the Haunted Mansion, which Gonzo is excited for because he sees it as an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a legendary magician named the Great Macguffin. Upon arrival, a local caretaker tries to warn them off, and several ghosts pop up in the cemetery. As a storm approaches, Gonzo and Pepe head to the door of the mansion, where they're greeted by the Ghost Host. What follows are a slew of celebrity cameos by the likes of John Stamos, Danny Trejo, Yvette Nicole Brown, Taraji P. Henson, and so forth, nods to the ride with Miss Piggy as Madame Leota, Fozzie Bear as the Hatbox Ghost, and Rowlf playing the organ in the ballroom/dining room. And this is probably where I should stop with discussing the plot, because I don't want to spoil the whole thing, because it's just something that needs to be watched first hand.

Now, what's really great about Muppets Haunted Mansion are all of the references to the Disney Parks ride of The Haunted Mansion, which was previously adapted into a family friendly horror comedy back in the early 2000's starring Eddie Murphy. However, this version has a number of elements from the ride that were absent from the previous film. Notable inclusions this time include the Ghost Host, played brilliantly by Will Arnett, the Caretaker, played by Darren Criss, and the Hatbox Ghost, as portrayed by Fozzie Bear. Other celebrity appearances include the aforementioned John Stamos, Danny Trejo, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Taraji P. Henson, and also include Alfonso Ribeiro, Chrissy Metz, Sasheer Zamata, Jeannie Mai, and Kim Irvine, as well as Ed Asner in one of his final film roles before his tragic passing just a couple months ago. Not only that, but the singing busts we're portrayed by the likes of Pat Sajak, Craig Robinson, Justina Machado, Skai Jackson, and Geoff Keighley.

I definitely enjoyed seeing many of my favorite Muppet characters as ghosts in the Haunted Mansion. Seeing the likes of Kermit, Walter, Scooter, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Sam the Eagle, and Lew Zealand as ghosts was really neat, and even more hilarious was Bunsen and Beaker as hallway busts inside the Haunted Mansion. Of course, the hallmark of any good Muppets movie is the humor and fourth wall breaking, and there is definitely plenty of that in Muppets Haunted Mansion. This is a fun, hilarious Halloween treat that the whole family can enjoy. If you have access to Disney+, definitely give this one a watch. Muppets Haunted Mansion gets a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time as HallowScream continues.
