Review - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just got home from seeing the latest Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and I definitely have a lot of thoughts on this film, so let's talk about it.

The movie focuses on Shang-Chi, who is an ordinary man living in San Francisco, when his past ultimately catches up to him when a group of assassins from the clan known as the Ten Rings show up, and Shang-Chi ends up fighting them on a bus. After heading to Macau and reuniting with his sister, Xialing, the two siblings ultimately reunite with their father, Wenwu aka the Mandarin, who has a plan to rescue his deceased wife, who he believes is trapped by her people in the mythical land of Ta Lo. And, that's all I'm going to say about the plot, because this is definitely one that needs to be seen first hand.

Okay, I have to say that I definitely enjoyed the cast of the movie. Simu Liu was excellent as Shang-Chi, as was Awkwafina as his best friend Katy. Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Michelle Yeoh, and Florian Munteau were also great in their roles in the movie, and I really appreciated the returns of the likes of Tim Roth as the Abomination and Benedict Wong as Wong. But the big stand-out of this movie was definitely Tony Leung as the Mandarin. Long story short, everyone on this movie did a terrific job. On top of that, I definitely enjoyed the level of mysticism in this movie, as it's definitely something new and different from anything seen in previous MCU outings. Seeing some of the unique creature designs was definitely exciting.

Now, at its core, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is still a martial arts movie, and this movie definitely had equal shares of terrific acting, terrific storytelling, and terrific martial arts fights that are plentiful AND can be seen clearly. Director Destin Daniel Cretin definitely shows his passion for the martial arts genre with this movie, and it's definitely the most fun I've had at a movie this year.

My final thoughts are as follows: this is definitely a fun outing for fans of Marvel and of martial arts movies. I'm giving Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
