Review - The Suicide Squad (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got home from seeing the new movie The Suicide Squad. The tenth entry of the DC Extended Universe, which also serves as a standalone sequel to the 2016 film Suicide Squad, is written and directed by James Gunn. And how does the man that made the Guardians of the Galaxy movies successful fare with Task Force X? Let's find out.

So, the movie has government agent Amanda Waller assemble Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad, to enter the war-torn Latin American island nation of Corto Maltese, where they are to infiltrate an old Nazi-era prison known as Jotunheim, and destroy all evidence of something known as Project Starfish, which is overseen by a scientist known as the Thinker. Returning members of the Suicide Squad include Col. Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn, while newcomers include the likes of Savant, Javelin, Weasel, Blackguard, Mongal, TDK, Bloodsport, Polka-dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, King Shark, and Peacemaker. Along the way, body counts rise, hilarious banter ensues, and the cosmic monstrosity known as Starro the Conqueror attempts to destroy the biggest city in Corto Maltese.

Okay, so right off the bat, this movie is funny as hell. The banter and dialogue between the members of the Suicide Squad is hysterical to the point that I nearly busted my guts out laughing my ass off. Also, this movie is definitely not for the exceptionally squeamish, as there are a lot of gruesome scenes, as well as a number of scenes involving rats that are controlled by Ratcatcher 2. Now, I'm not going to spoil the movie and say which members of the Suicide Squad get killed, but let me say that some will be a shock, some won't be too surprising, but each one is exceptionally gruesome.

I really liked the performances by the cast of this movie. Returning actors like Joel Kinnamin, Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis are all excellent, while newcomers like Idris Elba, John Cena, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Flula Borg, David Dastmalchian, Pete Davidson, and Nathan Fillion are all terrific as well. I also enjoyed Sylvester Stallone's performance as the voice of King Shark. He easily was one of my favorite characters in the movie, and he was just funny. Other cast members like Steve Agee, Peter Capaldi, and Alice Braga were great as well, and they definitely worked well with the material they were given.

Now, the action scenes in the movie feel like something out of one of the classic Vietnam War movies like Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now, and that, to me, is really cool. Now, when compared to this film's 2016 predecessor, it's obvious that James Gunn was given carte blanche to tell the story he wanted to tell, and be as gruesome and violent as he wanted to be.

I, honestly, think that this was one of the best DCEU films since Aquaman, and James Gunn probably gave us one of my favorite films of the year. I'm giving The Suicide Squad a rating of 5/5. Definition worth seeing, you guys. But, as I said, it's really violent and really gruesome, but it's hilarious, entertaining, and action packed. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
