Review - Jungle Cruise (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just got home from a fun-filled afternoon at the mall, which included a trip to the movie theater to watch Disney's new movie Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. And, I gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's my review of Jungle Cruise.

Based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, Jungle Cruise focuses on Lily Houghton, played by Blunt, who believes in the legend of the Tears of the Moon, an ancient and mystical tree hidden in the Amazon. Along with her brother MacGregor, played by Jack Whitehall, Lily hires river boat captain Frank Wolff, played by Johnson, to take them upriver to find it. Along the way, the trio are pursued by a shrewd harbormaster played by Paul Giamatti, a German Prince played by Jesse Plemons (Todd from Breaking Bad) and cursed Conquistadors from the 16th Century. What other dangers do our three travelers run afoul of? You're just going to have to see the movie yourself to find out.

Okay, so for all of you out there who've been on the Jungle Cruise ride at Disney, the movie does have a lot of callbacks and references to the ride, which is really cool. The chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt is absolutely fantastic, and Jack Whitehall is really funny as the older brother as well. The film itself feels like the perfect blend of Pirates of the Caribbean and The Mummy with Brendan Fraser. The overall spectacle of the Amazon is truly breathtaking, especially in the IMAX format. And setting the film in the early years of World War I was a smart move, in my opinion. It was neat seeing a rickety old river boat being pursued upriver by a German U-boat.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it's definitely one to be seen in a theater. I'm giving Jungle Cruise a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
