Review - F9 (2021)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and I just got home from seeing F9, so let's get into my thoughts on the latest entry of the Fast & Furious series.

So, we start off the movie with a prologue depicting the tragic death of Jack Toretto, father of Dom and Mia, and that Dom was on his father's pit crew along with Dom's younger brother Jakob. Cut to a few years after the events of The Fate of the Furious, and Dom is living a quiet life with his wife, Letty, and son, Brian. One day, Roman, Tej, and Ramsey arrive with a video message from Mr. Nobody, sending the crew on a mission to recover a dangerous device known as Aries, which Jakob and his group of mercenaries are also after.

So the race is on to recover Aries, and along the way, Dom's crew team up with Sean Boswell, along with Earl and Twinkie, from Tokyo Drift, Jakob also works with cyberterrorist Cipher, who wants to get back at Dom for what happened during The Fate of the Furious. Along the way, Letty, teaming up with Mia, learns that Han, Dom's old crew member, survived his death from Tokyo Drift, and he joins the team once again. I'll leave the rest of the film's plot a surprise for those who want to see the movie for themselves.

Okay, so I definitely enjoyed the performances by returning cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, Nathalie Emmanuel, Lucas Black, Bow Wow, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. The big new draw is John Cena as Jakob, and he was really good. I like that the movie, through flashbacks, shows the relationship between Dom and Jakob, and the event that drove the two brothers apart, explaining why Jakob's never been mentioned up to this point. I also like the explanation for how Han is still alive, and it's an explanation that fits with the established plot of the series so far.

The one big thing that kinda took me out of the movie a bit was the over the top action in this movie. Now, while many stunts in previous films of the series were a bit far fetched, they still worked on a physical level. This movie, however, goes almost way too far, and anyone who isn't a fan of the franchise probably won't enjoy the stunts a whole lot. However, the big saving grace is the emotional journey our characters go through. I, for one, enjoyed Dom's journey throughout this movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing where his journey goes in future entries.

A fun movie overall, I'm giving F9 a rating of 4.25/5. Now, I definitely encourage checking this one out, and definitely stick around for a mid-credits scene that isn't one to miss. This is Chuck signing off, and I'll see you guys next time.
