Marvel May - Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, we're at the end of Marvel's Phase Three, which means that we've reviewed every Marvel Studios film so far here on Chuck's  Movie Breakdown. Now, after today, we do have some more reviews for Marvel May, but future Marvel May events will most likely be centered on Marvel films outside of Marvel Studios. So, let's wrap up Phase Three with Spider-Man: Far From Home

So, Peter Parker, after the events of Avengers: Endgame, is looking forward to his class trip to Europe, because he wants to spend some time alone with MJ. Happy Hogan, however, let's Peter know that Nick Fury is looking for him. Peter, however, has no interest in saving the world, because the world wants him to be the next Tony Stark.

In Europe, Peter is tracked down by Fury, who has two reasons for seeking him out: first, to give him a pair of glasses (with an A.I. called E.D.I.T.H.) he inherited from Tony, and second, to recruit him to assist in fighting monstrosities called Elementals. The Elementals apparently come from another version of Earth, as does a masked warrior fighting against them known as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio. So, Peter teams up with Beck to fight these things, but he is quickly overwhelmed by trying to balance out being Peter Parker and being Spider-Man. Peter and MJ both reveal their feelings for each other, and MJ reveals that she knows that Peter is Spider-Man.

After a second fight against on of the Elementals, Peter is completely overwhelmed and decides to give the glasses to Beck, giving him control of the E.D.I.T.H. A.I. program. Unfortunately, this is exactly what Beck wanted, as he and several people previously employed by Tony Stark have teamed up to destroy his reputation. It turns out that the Elementals were fake, merely projections from a series of cameras. Now, combining that technology with the drones that E.D.I.T.H. could unleash means that Beck can cause real damage with his projections. Peter works to stop him and get the glasses back, teaming up with Happy, MJ, Fury, and Maria Hill to get the job done. There are some more twists and turns throughout the movie, but I don't want to ruin them here, so go check this one out for yourself if you want to know how it ends.

Honestly, this is probably my favorite Spider-Man movie since Spider-Man 2 back in 2004. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, and Jon Favreau are terrific once again, and I loved the scenes between Tom Holland as Peter and Zendaya as MJ. The new villain in this movie, Mysterio, was great, and actor Jake Gyllenhaal was an excellent choice for the role. Now, long-time Spidey fans will probably know that Gyllenhaal almost took over the role of Spider-Man from Tobey Maguire due to an injury Maguire sustained during production of Spider-Man 2, but that ultimately didn't happen. So, to see him as a villain in a Spider-Man movie is really cool. Now, I just need to say this: Mysterio is one of my favorite Spider-Man villains from the comics, alongside Doctor Octopus, Electro, and Scorpion.

Now, one nitpick I have about this movie is that, once again, we have a Spider-Man villain with ties to Tony Stark. In Homecoming, we had Vulture, who was a blue collar worker screwed out of a city contract by Tony Stark, and now we have Mysterio, who was a Stark employee who got screwed over by Tony Stark, who took credit and control for the projection technology. Personally, I would like to see Spider-Man villains in future Spider-Man films actually have ties to Spider-Man himself, and not just be guys that got screwed over by Iron Man.

Even with this one issue, Spider-Man: Far From Home is an incredibly fun entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a fun way to close out Phase Three. I'm giving this movie a rating of 5/5. Now, this December, we're getting the third entry of the MCU Spider-Man series: Spider-Man: No Way Home, which will feature returning villain actors Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and Jaime Foxx as Electro, as well as featuring actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. Definitely looking forward to the film in December.

This is Chuck signing off. We still have two more reviews for Marvel May to get through, so join me on Wednesday for my review of the Disney+ series WandaVision.
