12 Reviews of Christmas - SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas (2012)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Today for 12 Reviews of Christmas, I have a single question: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? That's right. It's SpongeBob! In 2012, a stop-motion animated special was produced titled It's a SpongeBob Christmas. Initially making its debut on CBS, this holiday special has aired every year on Nickelodeon, and I recently acquired a copy of the special on Blu-ray. So, let's get into It's a SpongeBob Christmas.

The special opens with Patchy the Pirate, a character whose been portrayed occasionally throughout the series, and is the one major live-action character in SpongeBob. Patchy, currently in claymation, has taken a mail truck and is heading to the North Pole to ask Santa for his Christmas wish: the chance to meet SpongeBob. Patchy wrecks the truck after popping a tire running over a fork in the middle of the road. Patchy, along with his parrot Potty, end up finding a cave that Patchy initially believes is Santa's home, but it turns out to be a polar bear cave. So, now that we've discussed the framing story of the special, let's talk about the main story.

It's Christmas time in Bikini Bottom, and SpongeBob is really excited for the holiday season. All around town, everyone is getting ready: Squidward is setting up lights to spell out the words "Go Away," Patrick is setting up traps to capture Santa, Sandy is trying to deconstruct the alchemy of Christmas, and Plankton is enraged that, due to being the biggest jerk in town, he only ever gets coal for Christmas. Plankton then uses an element called "Jerktonium," and laces a bunch of fruitcake with the dangerous mineral, which turns everyone who ingests it into a massive jerk. SpongeBob, like a moron, shares Plankton's fruitcake with everyone in Bikini Bottom. However, due to his pure heart and innocent love of Christmas, SpongeBob is immune to the effects of Jerktonium. Due to this, Plankton releases an evil, wind-up robot version of SpongeBob. This wind-up SpongeBob goes around wreaking havoc. Meanwhile, the real SpongeBob seeks Sandy's help, and dropping fruitcake into her analyzer, the two realize what's going on. Seeking an antidote, they learn that a song is the cure. The song in question is called "Don't Be a Jerk (It's Christmas)." SpongeBob sings the song to everyone in town, and all is normal again. However, Santa Claus has arrived with bad news. Everyone is on Santa's naughty list due to the Jerktonium. Plankton, however, is not on the naughty list, and gets the Christmas present he wanted: the secret formula of the Krabby Patty. However, the wind-up SpongeBob arrives, and tries to destroy Santa, but SpongeBob himself stops the metal menace. After seeing the Chum Bucket logo on a piece of the wind-up SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs takes the Krabby Patty formula back, and Santa and his elves give Plankton the coal he deserves. The special ends with Patrick catching Santa in a jellyfishing net.

It's a SpongeBob Christmas is a fun special. The actors, including Tom Kenny, all do a great job with this festive episode of SpongeBob. John Goodman does a terrific job as the voice of Santa, and the fact that the entire special is done in stop-motion claymation really makes it all the more special around Christmas time. I highly recommend this special, and I'm giving It's a SpongeBob Christmas a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off. Tomorrow, and I actually mean it this time, we'll be taking a look at The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, as 12 Reviews of Christmas continues.
